The First ESPEAY Awards were awarded Thursday night in the APSU Dunn Center, with Tearra Banks, Dre Gleason, Alex Robles and Kaylnn Pitts emerging with some of the evening’s top prizes.

APSU Baseball - Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s baseball team opens a five-game home stand when it hosts Arkansas State in a pair of midweek outings. The Govs and Red Wolves are scheduled to play a 6:00pm, Tuesday contest followed by a 3:00pm, Wednesday affair.

Austin Peay State University Athlete of the Week John Murry

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Senior guard John Murry, of the Austin Peay State University men’s basketball team, has been named the Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.

Murry won a trio of weekly awards—from the Ohio Valley Conference, College Sports Madness and the Tennessee Sports Writers Association—after averaging 28.5 ppg in a pair of crucial wins for the Govs last week. The Indianapolis native shot 46.0 percent (17-for-37) from the floor, 88.2 percent (15-for-17) at the free-throw line and 53.3 percent (8-for-15) from beyond the arc.

APSU Baseball records nine hits but succumbs to late rally by Indiana State

APSU Baseball - Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – It was another nine-run night for Austin Peay State University’s baseball team, but Indiana State rallied late to hand it a 12-9 loss, Sunday night, in the final game of the Riverview Inn Governors Challenge at Raymond C. Hand Park.  

The opening three innings were a quiet affair with the two teams scoring just three runs. The Govs held a 2-1 lead after those three frames thanks to first baseman Dre Gleason‘s two-run home run in the second inning.

For second straight day, APSU Baseball’s offense powers way to win

APSU Baseball - Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Third baseman Parker Phillips‘ two-run home run supplied the eventual game winning runs as Austin Peay State University’s baseball team downed Illinois State, 9-4, in Saturday action at the Riverview Inn Governors Challenge.  

For the second straight day, Austin Peay’s offense scored in the opening frame, launching out to a three-run lead. Right fielder Chase Hamilton supplied the game’s first run with a RBI double. Two batters later, first baseman Dre Gleason jumped on a pitch for a two-run double high off the batter’s eye in center field.

APSU Baseball - Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s baseball team unleashed a four home run night, helping support starting pitcher Alex Robles en route to a 9-2 season-opening victory, Friday afternoon, in the second game of the Riverview Inn Governors Challenge at Raymond C. Hand Park.

Robles (1-0) was impressive in the opener, facing just 18 batters (three over the minimum) in his five-inning outing.

APSU Governors Baseball kicks off 2017 hosting Riverview Inn Govs Challenge

APSU Baseball - Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Austin Peay’s baseball team gets the 2017 campaign underway when it hosts the Riverview Inn Governors Challenge, Friday-Sunday, at Raymond C. Hand Park.

The Govs will host Illinois State, Indiana State and Youngstown State in the round-robin event. APSU’s four-game, season-opening homestand concludes with a Tuesday contest against Southern Illinois.

Instant Peay Play: APSU Governors baseball opens season with high expectations for 2017

 

Instant Peay Play - APSU SportsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s baseball team opens its 2017 regular season this Friday, February 17th at Raymond C. Hand Park with expectations of making another deep run in the Ohio Valley Conference postseason and hopefully a return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in four seasons.

The Govs finished the 2016 season with a 30-23 overall record and a third-place finish in the OVC Tournament in head coach Travis Janssen’s first year at the helm, with the tournament appearance snapping a two-year drought of missing the post season.

APSU’s Alex Robles picked OVC Preseason Pitcher of the Year; Chase Hamilton picked preseason all-conference

APSU Baseball - Austin Peay State UniversityBrentwood, TN – Austin Peay State University senior right-handed pitcher Alex Robles was named the Ohio Valley Conference’s Preseason Pitcher of the Year and senior outfielder Chase Hamilton was a preseason all-conference selection, the league office announced the Friday before college baseball’s opening day.

The Governors also were picked to finish third in the OVC’s preseason poll of the league’s coaches and sports information contacts.
