Lady Govs win five-set battle at Murray StateAPSU Women’s Volleyball
Murray State (10-13, 6-6 OVC) opened the match in impressive fashion, winning the first set wire-to-wire. The Lady Govs scored five consecutive points to tie the set, 15-15, but could not gain a lead. Lady Govs victorious in home and OVC openerAPSU Women’s Volleyball
The first set was a combination of scoring runs by each team. Austin Peay (10-1, 1-0 OVC) opened with a 7-3 run as Doyle recorded three kills and senior Jessica Mollman added two kills. Murray State answered with a 10-6 run sparked by three Ashley Nenninger kills. The Racers later used a 9-3 run to build a 22-18 advantage as five different hitters recorded a kill during the burst. Austin Peay fought back, using consecutive kills by junior Ilyanna Hernandez to force a 23-23 tie. Lady Govs open home slate with OVC-openers against Murray State and UT MartinAPSU Women’s Volleyball After a highly successful season-opening road swing, Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team opens its home and Ohio Valley Conference schedules with a pair of weekend contests. The Lady Govs host long-time rival Murray State in a 7:00pm, Friday contest before UT Martin visits for a 2:00pm, Saturday match. Both contests will be played at the Dunn Center and admission is free to all fans. Austin Peay completed its 10-match road swing with an impressive 9-1 record. The Lady Govs finished second at both the Mississippi State Maroon Classic and the IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational before winning the East Tennessee Buccaneer Classic, last weekend. Sophomore Nikki Doyle and junior Ilyanna Hernandez paced the Lady Govs offense through the season’s opening 10 matches. Doyle leads the OVC with 3.60 kills per set while Hernandez is third among conference hitters with 3.31 kills per set. However, the offense has remained balanced with the team’s five starting hitters each recording a 10-plus kill outing this season.
