Blackburn kept the ball down all afternoon long as he induced 15 compared to two fly outs to go along with four punch outs en route to seven shutout innings. Nashville Sounds roll over Iowa Cubs, 12-3Nashville Sounds
Nashville erupted for seven runs on nine hits in the top of the first inning to give the 36-year-old right-hander a 7-0 lead over the I-Cubs. Smith (3-2, 3.35) followed up Michael Brady’s quality start Thursday night with one of his own. He lasted six innings and matched a season-high by fanning eight I-Cubs. The shutout loss was the second in three games against the Sky Sox. Nashville was also blanked in game one of Sunday’s doubleheader. The 11th inning win overshadowed a stellar performance by Storm Chasers pitcher Jake Junis. The right-hander shutout the Sounds (23-22) over seven innings and limited Nashville to two hits while racking up a season-high 12 strikeouts in the no-decision. Junis’ outing went for naught when the Sounds rallied in the eighth and ninth innings. Trailing 3-0, Joey Wendle sparked the first rally with a leadoff double in the eighth. The shutout for the Sounds was their second straight and third in the past six games. Nashville is 4-2 in shutout games this season. Paul Blackburn became the fourth straight Sounds starter to record a scoreless outing, extending the rotation’s stretch to 29.0 consecutive scoreless frames.
