Home runs by Nick Martini and Anthony Garcia, along with a strong performance by starter Frankie Montas helped the Sounds build a 5-2 lead through six innings. The wheels fell off in the seventh as Colorado Springs started the inning with three consecutive hits. A three-run top of the 10th inning helped the Sounds escape Tuesday’s matinee in Tacoma 6-3 over the Rainiers. Joey Wendle’s 99th career double for the Sounds put them in front 4-3. Shank’s game-winner off Sounds reliever Lou Trivino ended the 5-hour, 8-minute marathon that featured 12 pitchers, 21 walks, 20 hits, and 20 strikeouts between the two teams. The bottom of the 12th started when Trivino issued a leadoff walk to Kyle Waldrop. He moved to second when Danny Muno drew a free pass to put runners at first and second. Michael Brady started and went four innings, Bobby Wahl threw the fifth and sixth, and Corey Walter worked the final three frames to give the Sounds their eighth shutout of the season and first series win since June 1st-4th against the Iowa Cubs. In Brady’s first start since June 11th, the right-hander allowed three hits while racking up five strikeouts. Sounds’ starter Zach Neal retired Brandon Nimmo on a groundout to start the game, but then yielded hits to five of the next six batters. Jayce Boyd started the scoring with a two-out, two-run double to the gap in left-center. It didn’t stop there as catcher Xorge Carrillo followed with another double to the gap in left-center, this time scoring Boyd to make it 3-0. Nashville starter, Paul Blackburn was superb through the first five innings but things unraveled for him in the sixth. Stephen Bruno reached on an error by the shortstop Franklin Barreto. Blackburn then issued back-to-back free passes to load the bases for Jacob Hannemann who promptly singled home the game-tying run. Breyvic Valera was the hero when his base hit up the middle scored Wilfredo Tovar with the winning run with just one out in the 12th inning. The knock came just moments after the Sounds (32-29) took a 9-8 lead on Matt Chapman’s 16th home run of the season – a solo shot in the top of the 12th that broke the tie. After trailing multiple times throughout the night, Nuñez stepped to the plate with the bases loaded in the eighth and drilled a ball off the wall to plate a pair of runs to put the Sounds (32-28) ahead for good. The double was the second of the night for Nunez who is hitting .405 (17-for-42) over his last 12 games. Young left-hander Dalton Sawyer was pressed into action for Nashville and made a spot start after being transferred from Single-A Beloit earlier in the day.
