Austin Peay State University GovernorsHoover, AL – Austin Peay men’s golf team sits in fifth place after second-round play was suspended at the Samford Men’s Golf Intercollegiate.

The Govs shot a two-round 599 (297-302), but are 20 strokes behind leader Samford’s 579. Davidson (587) is second, followed by Sam Houston State (589) and Belmont (596). The suspended second round is set to begin at 7:30am, Tuesday, with final-round play to follow.

“I feel like we’re getting back into the swing of things,” head coach Kirk Kayden said. “We had a really good first round, but didn’t have a low score to fall back on in the second round. This team has the ability to really go low at any time. It’s just a matter of if and when.”

Junior Dustin Korte got the Govs off to a terrific start with an opening-round 68, good enough to lead the tournament after 18 holes. Sophomore Anthony Bradley added a 74, sophomore Marco Iten shot a 77 and senior Drew Miller put up a 78 to make up the Govs 297.

In the second round, Korte and Bradley both came back with 75s, while sophomore Trey Tarpley also joined the mix with a 75. Miller was the fourth counter with a 77, while Iten shot a 78.

“The course played tough today,” Kayden said. “We had trouble with some three putts and fast greens, but that’s to be expected as the guys get back into tournament play. The important thing is, at least after the first round, we were ahead of the other (Ohio Valley Conference) schools. That’s right where we want to be.”

Complete 36-hole results will not become available until the suspended second round is finished, Tuesday morning.
