Fran Riordan to Manage Club After Leading Double-A Midland to Texas League Title
Nashville, TN – Fran Riordan has been named the new manager of the Nashville Sounds as announced by the Oakland Athletics today. Riordan is the 28th manager in franchise history.
Riordan, 42, takes over the manager role vacated by Ryan Christenson who was hired as the bench coach for Oakland.
Riordan will manage at the Triple-A level for the first time after leading the Double-A Midland RockHounds to a Texas League title in 2017. It was the fourth consecutive championship for Oakland’s Double-A affiliate.
Nashville, TN – The Nashville Sounds plated seven runs in the fifth inning and hung on to dispatch the Las Vegas 51s, 8-7, in front of 6,521 fans at First Tennessee Park Wednesday night.
The Sounds have scored 18 runs on 30 hits in the first two games of the series, and have won 10 consecutive games over the 51s dating back to the 2015 season.
12 batters came to the plate in the fifth for Nashville. Seven reached via hit, one drew a walk, and another was safe on a fielder’s choice and error. Left fielder Kenny Wilson started the frame with a single to left field, and later added a second hit in the inning, a run-scoring knock to cap the scoring.
New Orleans, LA – The Nashville Sounds launched four home runs and got a solid performance from starter Chris Jensen en route to a 7-5 win over the New Orleans Baby Cakes Friday night in New Orleans.
Franklin Barreto got the party started immediately when he drilled the first pitch of the game from William Cuevas over the center field wall for a leadoff home run and 1-0 lead for Nashville.
Ryan Lavarnway, Chad Pinder, and Yairo Munoz added solo blasts for the Sounds (47-52). The four homers are the second-most for Nashville in a single game this season.
Franklin Barreto & Jaff Decker Lead Another Offensive Attack in Round Rock.
Round Rock, TX – Franklin Barreto and Jaff Decker had six of the Nashville Sounds’ 14 hits in an 8-3 win over the Round Rock Express Saturday night at Dell Diamond.
One night after the duo combined to go 7-for-9 at the plate, they went 6-for-9 with four runs scored and three driven in. The tandem at the top of the lineup fired up a first inning rally in which the Sounds (2-1) went on to score four runs to set the tone.
Barreto was hit by a Dillon Gee pitch, and Decker doubled to the opposite field to put runners in scoring position for Renato Nuñez.
Nashville Sounds Baseball
Nashville, TN – The Nashville Sounds Baseball Club, in conjunction with the Oakland Athletics, has announced its tentative Opening Day roster. The Sounds begin the 40th anniversary season on Thursday when they open Pacific Coast League play in Round Rock, Texas.
Led by the 21-year-old number one prospect Franklin Barreto, the Sounds have nine players listed among Oakland’s top prospects (according to Baseball America). The list includes INF Matt Chapman (No. 3), INF Chad Pinder (No. 7), RHP Daniel Gossett (No. 8), C Bruce Maxwell (No. 10), INF/OF Matt Olson (No. 17), INF/OF Renato Nuñez (No. 18), RHP Paul Blackburn (No. 23), and RHP Bobby Wahl (No. 26).
Papillion, NB – The Nashville Sounds plated four runs in the seventh and eighth innings in route to their 13-7 win Sunday afternoon over the Omaha Storm Chasers at Werner Park.
For the second consecutive day, Jaycob Brugman and Josh Rodriguez led the Sounds to a win over the Storm Chasers. Brugman would go 4-for-5 with a home run and three RBI and Rodriguez would club two homers in a 2-for-5 outing. Brugman’s four-hit night is his sixth four-hit game of the season with the Sounds.
Round Rock, TX – The Nashville Sounds could not recover after a four-run first inning by the Round Rock Express in a 8-3 loss Wednesday night at Dell Diamond.
After a Drew Robinson walk and a Brett Nicholas single, Joey Gallo launched a three-run home run to right-center field to give the Express an early lead. Matt Duffy then tripled to left to set up Ronald Guzman with an RBI single to make it a 4-0 Round Rock lead after one.
The Sounds scored a run in three straight innings from the third through the fifth to narrow the deficit to 5-3.
Round Rock, TX – Nashville Sounds right-hander Jharel Cotton just missed a perfect game and settled for a one-hit shutout in the Sounds’ 3-0 win over the Round Rock Express at Dell Diamond Tuesday night.
Cotton, recently acquired in a trade by the Athletics, retired the first 26 batters he faced on the night. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Round Rock second baseman Doug Bernier lined a 2-1 pitch to the right field wall for a triple to break up the bid at perfection.
The Virgin Islands native struck out a career-high 12 in the dominating effort. With Bernier at third, he punched out Drew Robinson for the final out of the game.
Round Rock, TX – Rangel Ravelo and Arismendy Alcantara hit back-to-back solo home runs in the seventh to help give the Nashville Sounds (67-49) a 6-1 win over the Round Rock Express (55-61) Sunday night at Dell Diamond.
Ravelo led off the Sounds seventh inning with his seventh home run of the season with a solo shot to left. Alcantara then quickly followed Ravelo with a solo shot of his own to put the Sounds up 6-1 in the seventh.
Colorado Springs, CO – The Nashville Sounds won 5-2 in a rain-shortened contest over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox Saturday night at Security Service Field.
Rain and thunderstorms rolled into Colorado Springs in the bottom of the sixth inning Saturday night. After retiring Lewis Brinson via a ground out, Sounds reliever Eduard Santos bounced a fast ball in the dirt with Garrett Cooper batting. Home plate umpire Alex Ortiz then quickly called for the tarp to be put on the field as they rain poured on Security Service Field.
