Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency - TWRANashville, TN – The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency has announced there is space available for those wishing to attend the Fourth Annual Tennessee Outdoors Youth Summit (TOYS), June 9th-14th, 2013. The summit is for high school students from across Tennessee.

The application deadline has been extended to May 10th, 2013.

Comprehensive Guide Promotes Agriculture to Consumers, Businesses and Policy Makers

The Tennessee Department of AgricultureNashville, TN – The Tennessee Department of Agriculture recently unveiled the premiere issue of Tennessee Ag Insider magazine, a comprehensive guide to the state’s farms, food and forestry. The department unveiled the magazine to the public March 20th at the annual Ag Day on the Hill celebration at Legislative Plaza in Nashville.

The yearly magazine serves as a primer for government and business leaders and consumers about the impact of agriculture and forestry on the state’s health, environment and economy.

A Tribute to Ken Tidwell, Tennessee’s Man Who Planted Trees

I feel compelled to write a few words about a man who was very special to me and who recently passed on to a better world. I have to respect his family’s wishes to not have a funeral or memorial, but as my way of saying goodbye, I need to memorialize him.

I first met Ken Tidwell in 1998 when I came to work for Extension in Montgomery County. Ken had recently completed the Master Gardener class (1997) and then received his certification from me in 1998. I think we were kindred spirits from the beginning, both having a love of nature and trees. Trees especially!

In 1999, he gave me a book entitled, The Man Who Planted Trees, by Jean Giono. In this book the author proceeds on a walk across a desolate valley in the foothills of the Alps near Provence in 1914. He describes the area as dry and barren, unfit for man or beast. In his journey he meets a solitary shepherd, Elzeard Bouffier, who plants acorns in the desert.

TOYS is for high school students from across Tennessee and will be hosted by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency.
