101st Airborne Division Soldiers to Commemorate “Hamburger Hill” 50th Anniversary with 31.87-mile Run / Walk

 

Fort Campbell KY - 101st Airborne DivisionFort Campbell, KY – On Wednesday, May 15th, 2019, several hundred active-duty 101st Airborne Division Soldiers will be joined by almost 80 Vietnam-era U.S. Army Veterans for a 31.87-mile ultramarathon at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, as part of their commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Hamburger Hill.

This week marks 50 years since the frontal assault on Hill 937, Dong Ap Bia, Vietnam. The ten-day engagement, more commonly referred to as Hamburger Hill, was fought by U.S. Army Soldiers, including those from the 101st Airborne Division, U.S. Marines and the South Vietnamese military.

101st Airborne Division holds Assumption of Responsibility Ceremony for New Senior Enlisted Advisor

 

Fort Campbell KY - 101st Airborne DivisionFort Campbell, KY – On Friday, May 10th, 2019 Command Sgt. Maj. Bryan Barker became the 33rd command sergeant major of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) during an assumption of responsibility ceremony outside McAuliffe Hall, the division headquarters.

Soldiers of the division, along with families and members of the Fort Campbell community, gathered to welcome Barker, who comes to the division from 5th Armored Brigade, First Army Division West, at Fort Bliss, Texas.

“I was not sure I would be able to arrive, in-process, sign for my house, start Air Assault School, and receive my household goods all within 24 hours, but with the momentous effort of the incredible team here we pulled it off,” said Barker.

Hamburger Hill Veterans return to Fort Campbell

 

Fort Campbell KY, 101st Airborne DivisionFort Campbell, KY – Dozens of Vietnam-era, 101st Airborne Division Veterans will return to Fort Campbell May 8th-9th to commemorate the 43rd anniversary of the Battle of Hamburger Hill.

The 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, “Iron Rakkasans” will welcome the Veterans back to Fort Campbell and will host several events in their honor.

On May 8th, two generations of Rakkasan warfighters will watch a screening of the movie Hamburger Hill together on Fort Campbell followed by a private tour and capabilities demonstration for the Vietnam-era “Iron Rakkasans.”

Hamburger Hill Veterans tour Fort Campbell

 

Fort Campbell KY, 101st Airborne DivisionFort Campbell, KY – On May 12th, 45 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment Vietnam Veterans came to Fort Campbell in honor of the 42nd anniversary of the Battle of Hamburger Hill.

The Battle of Hamburger Hill took place from May 10th through May 21st, 1969. Also known as the Battle of Dong Ap Bia Mountain, the battle for Hill 937 would rage on for 12 days. It became known as “Hamburger Hill”, due to the grinding nature of the fighting.
