Austin Peay Lady Govs Basketball starts second half of the OVC against Tennesssee State Lady Tigers

Austin Peay State University Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay will start the second half of its Ohio Valley Conference schedule against Tennessee State in a 5:15pm, Saturday contest at the Dunn Center. Both teams have struggled since opening the OVC schedule against each other – Austin Peay sits in ninth place one game behind eighth-place Tennessee State.

The Lady Govs have lost their last four outings, including both ends of last week’s road trip through Illinois. The Lady Tigers went 1-1 in their two contests last week, including an overtime home win against Morehead State. Tennessee State won the OVC opener between the two teams, 95-81 on December 29th, in a game that saw Austin Peay whistled for 32 fouls which led to 48 TSU free throws.

Austin Peay Lady Govs open OVC Slate at Tennessee State

Austin Peay State University Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay returns from its Christmas break to begin Ohio Valley Conference play with a 5:30pm, Thursday contest at Tennessee State. The Lady Govs bring a two-game losing streak into conference play after dropping back-to-back home contests just prior to the holiday break.

Tennessee State has lost its last three outings entering league action. Both teams played Florida A&M prior to their respective six-day breaks, Austin Peay dropping an 86-77 decision, December 21st, while Tennessee State fell to the Lady Rattlers, 90-75, the next day.

Lady Govs hold off Tigers

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team nearly squandered a 20-point second half lead but held on to record a 74-66 Ohio Valley Conference victory against Tennessee State, Saturday night at the Dunn Center.

Austin Peay (10-16, 9-5 OVC) built a 20-point lead, 58-38, just past the second half’s midway point. The Lady Govs outscored the Lady Tigers 24-12 over the opening 10-plus minutes.

Tennessee State (7-18, 3-11) slashed that lead in half in less than two minutes, scoring the game’s next 10 points and trailed by 10 points, 58-48, with 7:49 remaining.

Second-half charge leads Lady Govs past Tennessee State

Austin Peay State University GovernorsNashville, TN – It took a half for the offense to wake up, but when it did Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team used it and a stout defensive effort to charge past Tennessee State en route to a 60-45 Ohio Valley Conference victory, Saturday night, at the Gentry Center.

Austin Peay (6-13, 5-2 OVC) never led in the opening half but trailed by just one point, 25-24, at halftime. Junior Jasmine Rayner made a pair of free throws on the Lady Govs first possession to give APSU its first lead.

Rayner, Jamen post double-doubles in Lady Govs victory

 

APSU Governors LogoFor the second consecutive game, Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team used a big finishing kick to post a victory, extending their winning streak to three games with a 77-66 Ohio Valley Conference victory against Tennessee State, Thursday night at the Dunn Center.

Austin Peay (6-12, 5-2 OVC) closed the contest with an 18-6 run over the final five minutes. The Lady Govs converted 5-of-7 field goals and 8-of-10 free throws during the closing stretch. Sophomore Jasmine Rayner made the biggest impact down the stretch making both her field goals, converting three-of-four at the free-throw line and grabbing five rebounds in the final five minutes.

Tennessee State (6-10, 3-4) grabbed its final lead with 5:22 remaining on Jasmine Shuler’s three-point basket. Austin Peay’s Ashley Herring tied the game, 59-59, on the next possession with a pair of free throws – the game’s 10th tie. TSU’s LaDona Pierce made one of her two free throws to break the deadlock, but Herring responded with a layup to take the lead – the game’s 19th lead change – and APSU was on its way.

The Lady Tigers controlled most of a frantic first half – there were eight ties and 12 lead changes in the frame – and held a four-point, 36-32, lead at the break. TSU’s Oby Okafor posted a double-double in the opening half, finishing with 15 points and 10 rebounds. «Read the rest of this article»
