Nashville Sounds drop doubleheader to Round Rock Express

 

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN – The Round Rock Express trimmed the American Southern Division race to three games with a doubleheader sweep over the Nashville Sounds in front of 7,388 fans Sunday afternoon at First Tennessee Park.

The Sounds’ offense struggled and managed two runs in game one and just one run in game two.

Round Rock used a four-run third inning to help score a 5-2 win in the first game Sunday afternoon. Doug Bernier started the scoring with a solo homer off Nashville starter Jesse Hahn.

Nashville SoundsRound Rock, TX – Through 8.2 innings on Saturday night at Dell Diamond, the Nashville Sounds never trailed. Unfortunately, they could not retire that final out and the Round Rock Express walked-off with a 5-4 victory.

The Sounds got out to an early lead. In the top of the first, Ryan Roberts (3-for-4) singled and Kent Matthes (1-for-5) scored courtesy of an interference error on Express third baseman Trever Adams. With the run, the Sounds are now outscoring their opponents 18-4 in the first frame of games.

Nashville SoundsRound Rock, TX – The Nashville Sounds snapped a four-game skid with a 7-4 victory over the Round Rock Express on Friday evening at The Dell Diamond.

With the victory, Nashville (75-65) stayed alive in the PCL American Conference Southern Division race. First-place Memphis held a late lead in its contest at New Orleans; with a win, the Redbirds would their magic number to one to clinch the title.

Matt Pagnozzi, Jeremy Hermida and Jason Rogers all homered in the contest to give the Sounds 27 homers in the last 18 games, but not enough to pick up the win.

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN – The Nashville Sounds (66-56) completed a doubleheader sweep over the Round Rock Express on Sunday night at Greer Stadium, largely in part to third baseman Jason Rogers, who had three home runs and 9 RBIs on the night.

In the opener, Rogers belted a pair of homers and drove in a career-high six RBIs to lead the Nashville Sounds to a 13-4 win over the visiting Round Rock Express.

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN – Saturday night’s game at Greer Stadium, which was scheduled to be the third game of a five-game series between the first-place Nashville Sounds (64-56) and the Round Rock Express (61-59).

The outing has been rescheduled as a part of a doubleheader for Sunday, August 10th, at 5:05pm. The pair of games will each be seven-innings.

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN – The Nashville Sounds (64-56) picked up their third doubleheader sweep at Greer Stadium on Friday night, winning 4-2 over the Round Rock Express in game one and 2-1 in game two.

In the opener, first baseman Matt Clark belted a walkoff two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Sounds a dramatic 4-2 victory over the Express.

It was the 10th last at-bat victory of the season for Nashville, which extended its lead to one game over the Memphis Redbirds in the PCL American Conference Southern Division.

Nashville SoundsMetairie, LA – The Nashville Sounds (62-56) fell victim to a 15-hit attack from the New Orleans Zephyrs in Tuesday night’s series finale to lose 7-1 at Zephyr Field.

The Sounds drop the series with New Orleans, 1-3, which is only the team’s second losing series in their last 10 sets.

The Zephyrs broke through for three runs on six consecutive hits against Sounds starter Donovan Hand (1-7) in the 2nd inning. Outfielder Logan Schafer helped prevent the Zephyrs from adding another run in the frame by throwing out Rob Brantley at home plate.

Nashville SoundsRound Rock, TX – The Round Rock Express scored four unanswered runs to hang a 4-3 loss on the Nashville Sounds on Saturday evening at The Dell Diamond.

With the defeat, Nashville’s lead in the PCL American Conference Southern Division was reduced to a half-game over the Express.

Mike Fiers (6-4) took the loss despite turning in a quality start for the Sounds, allowing two earned runs (four total runs) on four hits while striking out eight and not walking a batter in his seven frames of work.

Nashville Pitchers Allow Just Three Hits; Hector Gomez and Jeremy Hermida Go Deep

Nashville SoundsRound Rock, TX – Powered by a dominant pitching performance from starter Michael Blazek, the first-place Nashville Sounds (47-42) downed the Round Rock Express (44-42) 4-0 at The Dell Diamond Friday night.

Blazek allowed just one hit in 5.1 innings while striking out six and not allowing a walk to pick up his first victory in 2014. Alfredo Figaro, Brent Leach and Donovan Hand followed out of the Nashville bullpen to clinch the victory, combining to allow just two hits and no walks over the remaining 3.2 innings. It marks the Sounds league-leading ninth shutout victory of the season.
