Austin Peay Governors seek to snap two-game losing streak at Southeast Missouri

Austin Peay State University GovernorsCape Girardeau, MO – Two Ohio Valley Conference teams attempting to regain their footing will battle each other 1:00pm, Saturday, when Austin Peay and Southeast Missouri hook up in the Redhawks homecoming contest in Houck Stadium.

Both APSU and SEMO are entering the contest amidst two-game OVC losing streaks. And both have been bludgeoned defensively, the Governors permitting 95 points combined in loss to UT Martin and Jacksonville State while Southeast Missouri has permitted 96 points in road defeats at Tennessee State and Eastern Kentucky.

Austin Peay Governors vs. Southeast Missouri

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Since rejoining the OVC in 2007, the Govs have played Southeast Missouri four times and the teams have split those contests. Ironically, APSU’s two wins have come in Cape Girardeau and SEMO’s two in Clarksville. The Govs won in Cape two seasons ago, 24-14.

This is Austin Peay’s second of three homecomings in October. On October 8th, the Govs lost at UT Martin, 61-23. The Govs also will play their own homecoming, October 29th, against Eastern Illinois.

Austin Peay Governors vs. UT Martin

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Saturday’s victory against Tennessee State allowed Austin Peay to open 2-0 in the OVC for the first time since 1977, the same season the Govs opened 3-0 for the last time.

When APSU rallied from being down 27-6, that 21-point deficit was the largest overcome by the Governors in school history. The previous largest deficit was 17 points, October 28th, 1978, when the Governors rallied from a 17-0 deficit to defeat Middle Tennessee, 28-17.

Ryan Named CIAF APSU Athlete of the Week

Austin Peay State UniversityJake RyanClarksville, TN – Jake Ryan, a junior on the Austin Peay State University football team, has been named the Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.

The arm of the junior quarter back helped carry the Governors to a come from behind victory over Tennessee State, Saturday. The Knoxville native threw for two touchdowns and a career-high 314 yards on 21-of-41 passing. Included in his totals was a 72-yard strike to Darryl Clack to open the third quarter, bringing the Govs within seven points. «Read the rest of this article»

Ryan and Stansell earn OVC honors

Austin Peay State University GovernorsNashville, TN – Jake Ryan, who recorded his first career 300-yard passing day in rallying Austin Peay State University from a 21-point deficit to defeat Tennessee State, Saturday night, has been named Ohio Valley Conference co-Offensive Player of the Week.

Meanwhile, placekicker Stephen Stansell, who nailed three field goals in the Govs’ 37-34 win against TSU, including the 35-yard game winner with 10.1 seconds left, has been selected OVC Specialist of the Week.

Football Govs downed by late Redhawk rally

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University football team’s opening salvo was not enough to withstand a late push by No. 18/20 Southeast Missouri, as the Govs fell, 41-24, in Ohio Valley Conference action, Saturday night in Governors Stadium.

The Govs scored a pair of first-quarter touchdowns to take a 14-0 lead. Ryan White scored on a 13-yard after the defense forced a SEMO three-and-out. Another stalled Southeast Missouri drive led to a 27-yard score by senior Terrence Holt.

Austin Peay Governors vs Southeast Missouri State Redhawks

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Since rejoining the Ohio Valley Conference the Governors own a 2-1 record against Southeast Missouri. However, both wins came in Cape Girardeau, MO, including last season’s 24-14 decision. Two seasons ago the Redhawks rallied from a 10-point second-half deficit to defeat the Governors, 33-30, in Governors Stadium, in the season finale.

Austin Peay enters the contest on a two-game losing streak. The Govs have endured no worse than a three-game losing streak in five of the last six seasons.

Southeast Missouri moved into the national rankings last week (now No. 18 in The Sports Network/Fathead.com poll and No. 20 in FCS Coaches Poll) for the first time since the 2003 season. SEMO comes to town with its longest winning streak (five games) since 1989. «Read the rest of this article»
