How much does the Home Life of a Child effect their Education

TeachersClarksville, TN – Educators have been under the gun for the perceived lack of progress children are making in school. All kinds of arm chair jockeys have jumped in to “fix” the educational system. Testing has become the mecca for deciding what a child knows or doesn’t know. Evaluating teachers has become the bar for whether or not they retain their jobs.

Let’s look at the other side of the picture for a minute as we start to throw the baby out with the bathwater in education.

Why No One Ever Asks You for Parenting Advice – Reality Check

Kris WolfeClarksville, TN – My friend called me for parenting advice the other day. I was in shock. She said, “I had to call you; you’re the only one who’d understand.” Ooh, I thought, this should be good. She continues, “Charlie (not his real name) got in trouble for fighting today and I don’t know if I should punish him.”

She goes on to describe her dilemma. She wants to teach him right from wrong. She wants him to be a good person. She also doesn’t want to punish him unfairly if he was the one being bullied (which her son claims.) She wants to be a good mom. She is a good mom. But good parenting isn’t always clear-cut. «Read the rest of this article»

Tired of Losing Sleep Over Your Decisions? Time for Change

CompassClarksville, TN – Is your compass broken? Lost? Never owned one?

We all feel lost sometimes. It’s a freaky feeling. You feel frustrated, confused, even panic stricken. You pull over, palms sweating, try to find your bearings, double check your directions, reset your navigation.

But what do you do if you don’t have directions, navigation, or a compass? You might know where to go, but you won’t know how to get there. You might stop for directions, or call someone to ask for their advice, but how do you know if you can trust them? How long do you wander before you turn around and go back? «Read the rest of this article»

How Much Influence on a Child’s Education Does Home Life Provide

TeachersRecently, educators have been under fire for the perceived lack of progress children are making in school. All kinds of arm chair jockeys have jumped in to “fix” the educational system. Let’s look at the other side of the picture for a minute as we start to throw the baby out with the bathwater in education.

In my generation, parents sent children to school with the following message, “If you get in trouble at school and don’t do your work, you get in twice as much trouble when you get home!” Today a child is more likely to insult his teacher if she tells him he’s doing something inappropriate with, “If you try to tell me what to do, I’ll tell my mother and father and they’ll sue you!” «Read the rest of this article»

R-E-S-P-E-C-T find out what it means to me

R-E-S-P-E-C-T find out what it means to me. How many remember this great song? It was first released by Otis Redding in 1965 but became the Signature Song for the great Aretha Franklin in 1967. While this may prove to be a bit of trivia information to use in your next game night, that is not what moved me to write this beautiful and chilly Clarksville evening.

I, like many of you was raised in a time when you K-N-E-W what R-E-S-P-E-C-T stood for and if you had a momentary lapse in judgment or memory your mother or father quickly corrected your course with a swift hand to the backside or a boomerang high heal. Respect to me was (and still is): «Read the rest of this article»

Are your a children a reflection of you?

2985066755_a23e402f28_m1In society today, much can be said about the loss of family values, and of in some respects discipline.

I do not condone abusive punishments, but I do discipline to my daughters when it is necessary. Many times this can be done with a simple look and order to “go to your room,” and at other times it involves taking away a prized possession, or possibly more severe actions such as grounding. Fortunately for both of us, this works well and ensures that our daughter obeys her parents, and is respectful to others both elders and other children. «Read the rest of this article»
