Nashville Sounds rally for eight runs in the eight to beat San Antonio, 7-3

Nashville SoundsSan Antonio, TX – The Nashville Sounds trailed 2-0 when they erupted for seven runs in the eighth inning to lead them to a 7-3 win over the San Antonio Missions Friday night in San Antonio.

Remarkably, all seven runs of the damage scored by Nashville in the eighth inning came with two outs. San Antonio reliever Donnie Hart was summoned in relief of Jay Jackson who had retired all four Nashville batters he faced. Hart faced three batters and failed to record an out.

Nolan Fontana started the rally with a ground-rule double to right-center. Zack Granite legged out an infield single to put runners at the corners for Carlos Tocci who cut the deficit in half at 2-1 with a run-scoring single. It was one of two hits for Tocci who leads the Sounds with five multi-hit games.

Nashville Sounds lose close one to Iowa Cubs, 6-5

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN – The Nashville Sounds lost to the Iowa Cubs 6-5 in the series finale Monday night at First Tennessee Park. The Sounds dropped four of five in the opening homestand of the season.

In the top of the second inning, Iowa struck first. With one out, the Cubs hit back-to-back singles by Jim Adduci and Zack Short. Taylor Davis followed with a soft groundball back to pitcher Phillips Valdez who attempted to turn a double play but threw the ball into center field, scoring Adduci and putting Short at third.

Cristhian Adames then grounded into a fielder’s choice to score Short to put Iowa up 2-0.

Nashville Sounds get blasted by Iowa Cubs, 10-4

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN – The Iowa Cubs maintained control over the Nashville Sounds for most of the game in front of a sellout crowd of 10,010 at First Tennessee Park Saturday night. With two big innings in the third and seventh inning, Iowa ran away with a 10-4 win.

The game was scoreless until the top of the third inning, where Iowa had 13 batters come to the plate and put up seven runs on five hits and five walks, including three doubles to give the Cubs a 7-0 lead.

Nashville answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. After back-to-back walks by Willie Calhoun and Matt Davidson to lead off the inning, Patrick Wisdom hit a three-run home run to left field to cut Iowa’s lead 7-3.

Nashville Sounds fall 5-4 to Iowa Cubs

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN – After a one-hour, 28-minute rain delay to begin the season, the Nashville Sounds came up short against the Iowa Cubs in a 5-4 Opening Day loss in front of 7,475 fans at First Tennessee Park.

Ian Happ’s big day at the plate was enough for Iowa. The Cubs center fielder delivered a go-ahead three-run double in the fifth inning and finished 2-for-5 with three RBI and a stolen base. Despite a late charge by Nashville in the ninth, the Cubs never relinquished the lead.

Nolan Fontana and Carlos Tocci paired to give the Sounds an early 1-0 lead in the second inning. Fontana doubled and Tocci knocked him in with a single through the right side.

Tennessee Volunteers - UT VolsKnoxville, TN – It’s Homecoming Week for the Tennessee Volunteers as they get ready to host Charlotte on Saturday afternoon at Neyland Stadium.

Kickoff for Saturday’s Homecoming game is set for 4:00pm on the SEC Network Alternate channel. Mike Morgan (play-by-play) and Barrett Jones (analyst) will have the call with Taylor Davis reporting from the sidelines. Vol Network radio affiliates will have a live audio broadcast with Bob Kesling, Tim Priest and Brent Hubbs. Sirius (Channel 94) and XM satellite radio (Channel 190) will also carry the game.

Saturday will mark the first-ever meeting between UT and Charlotte on the gridiron. The Tennessee Vols are 1-0 against teams from Conference USA this season after defeating UTEP, 24-0, on September 15th.

Nashville Sounds fall late to Iowa Cubs, 5-4

Nashville SoundsDes Moines, IA -Ramon Laureano hit a tie-breaking homer in the seventh inning on Saturday night, but the Iowa Cubs answered with a two-run homer in the eighth and beat the Nashville Sounds 5-4 at Principal Park. The five-game series is even at two wins apiece, as the Sounds have dropped consecutive games.

Laureano’s two-out smash to left off Jen-Ho Tseng in the seventh was his fourth homer in 13 games in July, and it broke a 3-3 tie. But Jake Sanchez, who worked around trouble in the bottom of the seventh, gave up a two-out two-run shot to Taylor Davis in the eighth to account for the 5-4 final.

Nashville SoundsDes Moines, IA – The Nashville Sounds held off a furious rally by the Iowa Cubs to open the unofficial second half of the season with an 8-7 win at Principal Park.

After racing out to a 5-0 lead and holding an 8-2 advantage in the top of the eighth, the Sounds allowed five doubles in the final two innings as the Cubs scored five runs to make it close.

Bruce Maxwell started the scoring with an RBI single in the top of the second inning. Nashville added four runs in the third as Franklin Barreto, Anthony Garcia, Sheldon Neuse and Jorge Mateo had hits.

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN – Four Nashville Sounds’ pitchers shut down the Iowa Cubs in a 4-1 win in front of 8,879 fans at First Tennessee Park Friday night.

Raul Alcantara started for the Sounds and one-hit the Cubs over three scoreless innings before giving way for Oakland Athletics right-hander Daniel Mengden. Pitching on a Major League rehab assignment, Mengden went 3 2/3 innings and limited Iowa to one unearned run.

The Sounds built an early lead behind Alcantara with a pair of runs in the first inning. Ramon Laureano started the bottom of the first with a triple to the gap in right-center.

Nashville Sounds notch fifth shutout in fifth straight win

Nashville SoundsDes Moines, IA – The Nashville Sounds used stellar pitching to extend their winning streak to five games with a 1-0 win over the Iowa Cubs at Principal Park Thursday night.

It took 10 innings to get the job done as the Sounds clinched their third straight series win after dropping the season-opening series in New Orleans.

Using baseball’s new pace of game rules, the top of the 10th began with pinch-runner Melvin Mercedes at third base in a 0-0 game. Mercedes moved to third on Slade Heathcott’s infield single. With runners at the corners, Anthony Garcia bounced into a 6-4 fielder’s choice to score Mercedes with the eventual winning run.

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN – The Nashville Sounds bid for a series sweep fell short in a 6-3 loss to the Iowa Cubs in front of 8,771 fans at First Tennessee Park Thursday night.

Some late heroics by the Sounds went for naught after Anthony Garcia tied the game with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning with a two-run home run. 

With the game even at 3-3, the new pace of play rules were put into effect with both teams starting their inning with a runner at second. Both teams failed to score in the tenth, but Iowa plated three runs in the 11th to take a 6-3 lead.
