It was the first conference doubleheader sweep for the Lady Govs (18-28, 9-17 OVC) this season and the first time in the all-time series versus Jacksonville State that they took both ends of a doubleheader against the Gamecocks.

In Game 1, it came down to the last pitch of the game, as freshman Paige Neely singled in fellow freshman Lauren Bradley – on a 1-2 count and two outs – for the game winner.

Jessica RyanJacksonville State (23-24, 17-9 OVC) the number two team in the conference coming into Saturday’s doubleheader, had led 2-1, after scoring twice in the top of the third inning on bases-loaded single up the middle by Hayden Crawford – driving in both runs.

But the Lady Govs tied 2-2 the game in the bottom of the fourth inning on back-to-back doubles by red-shirt junior Jessica Ryan and sophomore Kayla Davidson.

Morgan BrewerAustin Peay had jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single by Morgan Brewer, driving in Neely – who had reached on a two-out double.

Neely would lead the Lady Govs with three hits, while Brewer picked up the win – giving up just five hits and striking out two.

Tiffany Harbin too the loss for the Gamecocks, despite striking out 10 batters, but also gave up nine hits to the Lady Govs.

In Game 2, Austin Peay broke out a 2-1 game with six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning – aided by two Gamecock errors.

Ryan would open up the inning with her second double of the game and scored when freshman pinch hitter Sarah Rasmussen doubled into left center field to make it 3-1.

That would be all for Jacksonville State starter Sam Snow, as Savanna Hennings was brought in to face another pinch hitter in freshman Laurel Burroughs.

Lauren de CastroBurroughs would draw a walk, to put runners at first and second with no outs, with APSU’s leading hitter sophomore Lauren de Castro coming to the plate.

But Hennings would walk de Castro to load the bases and walk Neely to drive in a run to make it 4-1.

That would be all for Hennings, as Jacksonville State was forced to bring in their ace Harbin to try to get out of the inning.

Amy MillsBut the Gamecocks defense would fail them, as left fielder Jessica Guy dropped two fly balls, which turned into four more runs for Austin Peay and an 8-1 lead.

Jacksonville State would score a run in the top of the seventh, for the 8-2 final margin.

Austin Peay had taken a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI double by Brewer, scoring senior Amy Mills, but The Gamecocks tied the game 1-1 in the top of the fourth.

Catie CozartAustin Peay would take the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI single by senior Catie Cozart – driving in Neely.

Neely, Cozart and Ryan led the Lady Govs with two hits each, while de Castro picked up the complete-game win – giving up just three hits, while striking out three.

Austin Peay Lady Govs Softball finishes their series with the Jacksonville State Gamecocks Sunday at Cheryl Holt Field. The game starts at 1:00pm.
