APSU Athletics icon Cheryl Holt inducted to OVC Hall of Fame

 

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsNashville, TN – For nearly 35 years, Cheryl Holt served in the Austin Peay State University (APSU) athletics department in various roles. Holt has been inducted into the Ohio Valley Conference Hall of Fame during ceremonies held in conjunction with the OVC Spring Meetings, Friday.

Inducted into Austin Peay’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 2012, Holt joined the Governors athletics program in 1982 as a tennis coach but was tapped by then-Director of Athletics Johnny Miller to elevate the volleyball program. She served just two seasons as tennis coach, but her tenure as volleyball coach lasted much longer – an impressive 23 seasons.

Former APSU Basketball coach Dave Loos selected for OVC Hall of Fame induction

APSU Men's BasketballBrentwood, TN – Longtime Austin Peay State University men’s basketball head coach and athletics director Dave Loos has been elected to the Ohio Valley Conference Hall of Fame and will be officially inducted at the annual OVC Honors Brunch, Friday, June 1st, 2018 at the DoubleTree Hotel in downtown Nashville.

The Ohio Valley Conference Hall of Fame was organized in 1977 with the intent of honoring the coaches, administrators, faculty and staff that have been associated with the OVC for at least five years and provided extensive and outstanding service to the Conference.

Austin Peay State University Team Physician Cooper Beazley honored by Tennessee Board of Regents

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN -On May 20th, the Tennessee Board of Regents recognized Dr. Cooper Beazley’s unwavering support of Austin Peay State University over the years by presenting him with the 2014 Chancellor’s Award of Excellence in Philanthropy.

Former APSU President Tim Hall, who nominated Beazley for the award, said, “For almost three decades, this individual has dedicated his time and his own financial resources to helping the young student athletes at Austin Peay. He takes his oath as a doctor seriously, and he has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to keep these young men and women healthy. “

Austin Peay inducts Dr. W. Cooper Beazley, Gary McClure and Andrew Lorentzson into APSU Hall of Fame

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Gary McClure, Austin Peay State University’s all-time winningest baseball coach who has taken his Governors to five NCAA Regionals, and Dr. W. Cooper Beazley, whose dedication to APSU athletics and its athletes extends well beyond financial contributions and services, were inducted into to the APSU Athletics Hall of Fame, Saturday.

In addition, Andrew Lorentzson, who starred in basketball for Austin Peay in the mid-1930s when it was a junior college, also was inducted through the University’s new Honors category, reserved for those former athletes who competed at least 50 years ago. Loren McCamey Schanding, granddaughter of the late Lorentzson, who died in 1971, accepted the award for the family.

Dr. Beazley has helped APSU athletics enjoy a “Wonderful Life”

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Former APSU athletic trainer Chuck Kimmel likes to compare Dr. Cooper Beazley to George Bailey, the selfless central figure of the movie “It’s a Wonderful Life,” and the Austin Peay training room, to Bedford Falls, the fictional home of Bailey.

Kimmel wonders what APSU athletics medical care, what the APSU athletic training room would be like today if not for the longtime orthopedic surgeon.

Burggraf to receive Steve Hamilton Sportmanship Award for second straight year

 

APSU Governors LogoBrentwood, TN – Carrie Burggraf, Austin Peay State University’s standout track and field student-athlete, has been selected for a second straight year as recipient of the Ohio Valley Conference Steve Hamilton Sportsmanship Award.

That honor will be presented, Friday, at the annual OVC’s Awards Luncheon. Also, on Friday, former APSU Athletic Trainer Chuck Kimmel will be inducted into the OVC Hall of Fame.

The Steve Hamilton Sportsmanship Award is given annually to an Ohio Valley Conference male or female student-athlete of junior or senior standing who best exemplifies the characteristics of the late Morehead State student-athlete, coach and administrator Steve Hamilton. Criteria include significant athletics performance along with good sportsmanship and citizenship.
