Instant Peay Play: Eleven former APSU Govs continue to shine in pro baseball leagues as MLB All-Star week approaches

 

Instant Peay Play - APSU SportsClarksville, TN – With one week to go before Major League Baseball takes a pause for its annual mid-season All-Start Game, 11 former Austin Peay State University (APSU) baseball players are still getting it done on pro baseball fields around America and in international leagues.

Currently, two former Govs pitchers Shawn Kelley (Texas Rangers) and Ryne Harper (Minnesota Twins) are on MLB rosters, with Kelley leading the team with 11 saves — as the team’s closer – while also having three wins in five decisions and a 2.79 ERA, while Harper has made the most of his first action in the majors in posting a 3-1 record with a save and a 2.97 ERA as a set-up man out of the bullpen.

Customs House Museum exhibit “Batter Up!” features America’s Favorite Pasttime

 

Customs House Museum & Cultural CenterClarksville, TN – The Crouch Gallery at the Customs House Museum & Cultural Center is loaded packed with nostalgia, art, and artifacts of baseball. The exhibit, titled Batter Up! Celebrating America’s Pastime, features items from the Museum’s collection, the art of Chris Felix, and memorabilia from private collectors.

One gem in the show includes a 1927 World Series game ball signed by the Washington Senators, including local legend Hod Lisenbee and several Baseball Hall of Famers, including Goose Goslin, Tris Speaker, and Sam Rice.

Hankook Tire & DAV Mobile Service Program Triples Number of Veterans Helped Across United States

 

Hankook Tire America Corp.Nashville, TN – Hankook Tire America Corp., the leading and one of the fastest growing tire companies in the world, continued its successful partnership with DAV (Disabled American Veterans) in 2017 by expanding the number of Hankook-sponsored DAV Mobile Service Office (MSO) stops across the country, which had an even greater impact on the veteran community.

This year’s program provided free services to 355 veterans and their families – more than tripling the number of veterans serviced since the partnership program began in 2015.

Instant Peay Play: APSU Governors baseball fans expectations should be high with Travis Janssen hire

 

Instant Peay PlayClarksville, TN – For the best part of the last 20 years Austin Peay State University’s baseball team has been at or near the top of the standings of the Ohio Valley Conference, so this past week’s announcement of the hiring of Travis Janssen as its new head coach should keep fans expectations high.

Since 1994 the baseball program has won 12 OVC titles, six regular-season championships (1994, 2003, 04, 07, 11, 12) and six OVC tournament titles (1996, 2005, 07, 11, 12, 13), which led to six NCAA tournament appearances and two regional final games.

APSU selects Travis Janssen as 11th head Baseball Coach

Austin Peay State University Governors - APSUClarksville, TNTravis Janssen, who revived a Northeastern State (Oklahoma) program as head coach in between two stints as the top assistant at Jacksonville State, has been hired as Austin Peay State University’s new head baseball coach.

Janssen replaces Gary McClure, who resigned in August. The Manhattan, KS, native becomes APSU’s 11th head baseball coach but only second since 1988.

Nashville Sounds announce Rick Sweet as new manager

 

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN – The Nashville Sounds have announced that Rick Sweet will serve as the team’s field manager for the 2014 season.

The 61-year-old Sweet becomes the 25th manager in the Sounds’ 37-year franchise history and will be joined by a returning coaching staff. Coach Bob Skube , pitching coach Fred Dabney, trainer Aaron Hoback, and strength & conditioning specialist Andrew Emmick all were previously announced as returning for another season in Music City in 2014.

APSU Hall of Famer and 10 Year Major League Baseball Player Jimmy Stewart passes away at age 73

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Jimmy Stewart, the former Austin Peay baseball great who was a member of the University’s first athletic Hall of Fame class and enjoyed a 10-year major league baseball career, died Saturday in Tampa, FL.

A former Govs third baseman/shortstop, Steward was inducted into the APSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1978-79 along with George Fisher, Halbert Harvill, Dick Hays, Tom Morgan, Stella Schupp and broadcaster Earl Walton a year after Dave Aaron was the lone inductee when the Hall of Fame was initiated in 1977-78.
