Austin Peay Lady Govs Golf captures OVC Academic Award for fourth straight year

Austin Peay State UniversityNashville, TN – For a fourth straight year, Austin Peay State University women’s golf team has earned the Ohio Valley Conference Team Academic Achievement Award for its respective sport.

Lady Govs golf was one of two APSU teams to earn such distinction, joining the Governors Tennis team. The team academic achievement awards are presented annually in each OVC-sponsored sport to the member institution’s team with the greatest percentage of its eligible student-athletes who achieved a 3.25 grade point average or higher-the Lady Govs golf team had seven members earn such status while the men’s tennis team had five.

Austin Peay State University Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team faltered briefly but used a powerful offensive performance to win a four-set (25-20, 25-17, 22-25, 25-20) Ohio Valley Conference decision against Tennessee Tech, Friday night, at the Dunn Center.

Austin Peay Lady Govs Volleyball close home schedule with Tennessee Tech, Jacksonville State

Austin Peay State University Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team closes out the home portion of its 2011 schedule with a pair of Ohio Valley Conference contests this weekend. First, the Lady Govs will host Tennessee Tech, 7:00pm, Friday before a 1:00pm, Homecoming Saturday contest against Jacksonville State. Prior to the start of Friday’s contest Austin Peay will recognize four seniors: Marie Mullins, Paige Economos, Kayla Grantham, and Illyanna Hernandez.

Plybon’s career-best outing not enough as Lady Govs fall to UT Martin

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Freshman middle blocker Hillary Plybon finished with a career-high 17 kills but it wasn’t enough as Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team fell in four sets (24-26, 25-22, 19-25, 18-25) to UT Martin, Friday night, in Ohio Valley Conference action at the Dunn Center.

Austin Peay (6-16, 4-7 OVC) will wonder what could have been after splitting the first two sets. The Lady Govs actually had the first opportunity at set point, 24-23, but committed three consecutive errors – a ball handling mistake on set point, an attack error and a reception error – and allowed UT Martin to escape with a 26-24 victory. Plybon had a huge hand in the set, scoring eight of her kills in the frame, including back-to-back kills twice to keep the set at hand.

Lady Govs continue home stand, host Southeast Missouri and Murray State

Austin Peay State University Lady GovsClarksville, TN – With a pair of confidence-building victories in hand, Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team will continue its five-match home stand with a pair of weekend Ohio Valley Conference contests.

The Lady Govs host second-place Southeast Missouri in a 7:00pm, Friday contest before meeting fourth-place Murray State at 2:00pm, Saturday. Both contests will be played at the Dunn Center.

Stotts has career night in Lady Govs victory against Eastern Kentucky

Austin Peay State University Lady GovsClarksville, TN – With injuries and illness depleting its roster, Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team turned to freshman Jada Stotts who turned in her season’s best performance in a five-set Ohio Valley Conference victory against Eastern Kentucky, Monday night, at the Dunn Center.

Stotts was tapped for her second career start after Austin Peay (4-14, 2-5 OVC) saw junior Alex Sain and senior Kayla Grantham – their two regular right-side hitters – sidelined due to illness and injury, respectively. Stotts responded with aplomb, posting a career-best 13 kills with a .414 attack percentage.

Lady Govs surrender lead, fall in five sets to SIUE

Austin Peay State University Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team led 2-1 and was a set from snapping its losing streak but fell in five sets to SIU Edwardsville, Saturday, in Ohio Valley Conference action at the Dunn Center.

Austin Peay (2-13, 0-4 OVC) grabbed its 2-1 lead courtesy a dominating third set performance. The Lady Govs opened the set with six kills and a service ace to build an 8-1 lead. Austin Peay finished the set with 16 kills, including eight by senior outside hitter Ilyanna Hernandez. Meanwhile, the Cougars offense was held to eight kills while posting five attack errors.

Hernandez post 17 kills in Lady Govs loss at Eastern Kentucky

Austin Peay State University Lady GovsRichmond, KY – Senior outside hitter Ilyanna Hernandez posted a season-best 17 kills but it wasn’t enough as Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team dropped a four-set decision (25-23, 19-25, 23-25, 23-25) against Eastern Kentucky, Friday night, in the Ohio Valley Conference opener for both teams at McBrayer Arena.

Austin Peay (2-10, 0-1 OVC) trailed most of the match and had to mount comeback attempts in the first, third and fourth sets to force the close scoring. Hernandez was consistent throughout the night, recording four kills in the first set, three in the second and five each in the third and fourth sets to finish with 17 kills – the most by a Lady Govs hitter this season.

Lady Govs show grit in four-set loss to Elon

 

APSU Sports: Women’s Volleyball

Austin Peay State University Lady GovsIndianapolis, IN – Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team fought tooth and nail, but fell in four sets (23-25, 21-25, 29-27, 26-28) to Elon in its final match at the Butler Invitational, Saturday, at Hinkle Fieldhouse.

The first two sets saw Austin Peay (2-8) continue to battle late set woes. The Lady Govs were the first team to 20 points in both sets, but could not close out either time. Austin Peay led 21-17 in the opening set but Elon stormed back with an 8-2 run to win the set. The Lady Govs held an even larger advantage (20-15) in the second set, but Elon again responded with an impressive 10-1 run to win the set.
