Austin Peay State University’s Michael Dickins creating own work, championing others

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – For a moment, it sounded as if someone was trapped deep inside the metal barrel. This unnerving feeling grew more intense as gallery visitors walked toward the rusty drum.

It looked like a normal barrel, used to collect garbage or – for the more desperate – to build a fire on an icy winter night, but once visitors peered inside, they heard flat, unemotional voices offering up “thoughts and prayers.”

In effort to authenticate Legros discovery, APSU student finds connections

Austin Peay State University (APSU)

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – Earlier this semester, Austin Peay junior Katherine Tolleson discovered two drypoint creations by famed artist Alphonse Legros in the University’s Permanent Collection.

Tolleson and APSU gallery director Michael Dickins started investigating clues on the drypoint’s paper, such as watermarks, signatures, titles and impression numbers. Legros’ signature was clear. And on one of the prints, titled “The Sailor,” Legros writes the image is one of only 10 imprints.

Austin Peay State University (APSU)

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – As Austin Peay State University (APSU) freshman Sarah Potter combed through the University’s art collection in early February, she came across a photo of a man sitting on a rock, his back to the camera.

“I was looking for personality, for stories,” Potter, who’s curating an exhibit for the walls of Human Resources in the Browning Administration Building, said. “I liked it, so I set it aside with the other photographs.”

Austin Peay State University Art Students Sarah Potter and Katherine Tolleson hold their discoveries. Potter is holding a Philippe Halsman photo print of Winston Churchill, and Tolleson is holding a drypoint by Alphonse Legros.
