Holt, Harris earn Legends Awards; Doyle, Terry named Most Outstanding Athletes

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Two senior athletes who authored record-setting careers have been named the 2010-11 Legends Award recipients.

And two underclass athletes who led their respective programs into the postseason have been named Most Outstanding Athletes. The recipients of Austin Peay State University’s most cherished athletic awards along with the individual team honors were made Monday night at APSU’s annual Athletics banquet, held in Dave Aaron Arena.

Jon Clinard Named to Preseason All-OVC Team

Austin Peay State University GovernorsBrentwood, TN – Austin Peay State University’s baseball team will enter the 2011 campaign with lowered expectations – at least from the Ohio Valley Conference’s coaches, who picked the team to finish seventh in the league’s preseason poll released, Friday. Junior second baseman Jon Clinard was the only Austin Peay player selected to the OVC’s preseason team.

Jacksonville State was picked to win the league’s regular-season race, receiving four first-place votes and 59 points in the balloting. However, it was closely followed by Southeast Missouri which received three first-place votes and 55 points. In addition, Tennessee Tech was picked third, receiving the two remaining first-place votes and 54 points.

APSU pitchers Marshall, Vicini sign professional contracts

 

APSU Governors LogoAustin Peay State University pitchers Ricky Marshall and David Vicini have signed professional contracts, Govs head coach Gary McClure announced, Friday.

Five of the Govs 11 seniors in 2010 have now signed professional contracts. Marshall and Vicini join Zach Gerler (Washington Nationals), Stephen Huff (Chicago White Sox) and Trey Lucas (Boston Red Sox) who previously signed free-agent contracts. «Read the rest of this article»

Govs wrap season with sweep of UT Martin

 

APSU Governors LogoAustin Peay State University’s  baseball team wrapped up its 2010 schedule with an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader  sweep of UT Martin, Saturday. The Govs won the opener 9-3 before holding on to win the season finale, 11-9.

Austin Peay (27-25, 8-13 OVC) used a six-run third inning to break open the day’s first game. Ten Govs batters came to the plate and the first six batters reached base safely. Designated hitter Matt Kole, first baseman John Hogan, catcher Trey Lucas and third baseman Shayne Martin each batted in a run with shortstop Reed Harper closing the rally with a two-run double. «Read the rest of this article»

APSU Baseball: Govs offense continues hot streak in win at Middle Tennessee

 

APSU Governors LogoMurfreesboro – Another night, another offensive outburst as Austin Peay State University’s baseball team posted a season-high 22 hits en route to a 19-13 non-conference victory against Middle Tennessee, Wednesday night at Reese Smith Field.

Austin Peay (16-10) won its third-straight road contest after winning just one of its first eight. The Govs also set a season-high in hits for the third consecutive game and have now posted 58 hits in those three games.

Middle Tennessee (18-11) grabbed an early 3-1 lead courtesy outfielder Justin Guidry’s three-run home run in the first inning. The Blue Raiders extended their lead to 4-1 on third baseman Tyler Burnett’s RBI double in the second.

APSU Baseball: Bat Govs open signing period with splash, nine sign NLIs

 

apsugovernorsFacing the loss of 11 seniors, including four pitchers, following the upcoming 2010 campaign, Austin Peay State University head baseball coach Gary McClure and his coaching staff had plenty of work to do on the recruiting trail. That work paid off, Wednesday, as nine players signed a letter of intent on the first day of the signing period.

The Govs signed eight high school seniors and one junior college sophomore to letters of intent. The nine players hail from seven different states: Tennessee, Colorado, Florida, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey and New York. Four pitchers, including three left-handed hurlers, are included in the count along with two catchers and three fielders.
