Instant Peay Play: APSU Baseball, Savannah Amato, Tymeitha Tolbert have a big week ahead

 

Instant Peay Play - APSU SportsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s athletic school year is winding down, but there is still plenty on the line this coming week, with the Governors baseball team heading to the Ohio Valley Conference baseball Championship Tournament, while APSU pole vaulter Savannah Amato and sprinter Tymeitha Tolbert head to the NCAA East Preliminary Meet.

Opening the week will be the Governors baseball team (30-25, 17-13 OVC), who will be the OVC Tournament’s fifth-seed, and will open play, 9:00am, Wednesday at Choccolocco Park in Oxford, AL, versus the Jacksonville State Gamecocks (30-23, 18-12 OVC), the tournament’s fourth-seed.

APSU Women's Track and FieldClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University track and field will send a pair of student-athletes to next week’s NCAA East Preliminary in Tampa, Florida, with APSU junior Savannah Amato and sophomore Tymeitha Tolbert scheduled to compete.

This is the seventh year in a row that Austin Peay has had at least one athlete earn regional qualification.

Austin Peay State University’s Breigh Jones named Athletic of the Week

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Junior sprinter Breigh Jones, of the Austin Peay State University women’s track and field team, has been named the Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.

Jones emerged from last weekend’s 2015 Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships with some serious hardware, earning two gold medals and two silver medals alongside her 2015 OVC Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year honor. She led Austin Peay to a third-place finish in the first OVC Track and Field Championship hosted by Austin Peay since 2001.

APSU Track and Field has Four Lady Govs set school records at OVC Outdoor Championships

Austin Peay State University Lady Govs - APSUClarksville, TN – Four Austin Peay State University school records fell on Day One of an oft-interrupted 2015 Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Championships at Governors Stadium.

At the close of the first day of competition, Austin Peay sits in sixth place with 19 points; Southeast Missouri leads the women’s event with 38.5 points at the close of Day One, followed by Murray State and Eastern Illinois (32).

Austin Peay State University Athlete of the Week Amia Butler

Austin Peay State University Sports Information - , APSU, Governors, Govs, Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Freshman Amia Butler, of the Austin Peay State University track and field team, has been named this week’s Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.

Butler won the long jump at the Vanderbilt Black and Gold with a personal-best 5.77m (18’ 11.25”) leap on a cold, rainy afternoon in Nashville. The mark ranks second in the Ohio Valley Conference and is the best by a Lady Govs since Sherlonda Johnson’s NCAA Regional-qualifying 5.99m leap at the 2006 OVC Championships.

Sprinters lead Lady Govs at Saluki Fast Start

Austin Peay State University GovernorsCarbondale, IL – Austin Peay State University women’s track and field team had a noteworthy start to the indoor season, Friday, at the Saluki Fast Start, hosted at the SIU Rec Center.

Heading into the meet, head coach Doug Molnar was expecting to have a handle on his team’s progress from the fall training season. The results are in and Molnar’s team has high expectations.

“This is the best start, out of the gate, that we’ve had since I’ve been here,” Molnar said. “I was really impressed with where our long sprint group is; coach (Troy) Morris did a great job with that group over the fall.” «Read the rest of this article»
