Govs win doubleheader’s nightcap against Eastern Michigan

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Junior Michael Blanchard’s bases-clearing triple capped a five-run sixth inning as Austin Peay State University’s baseball team posted a 10-5 victory in the nightcap of a doubleheader against Eastern Michigan, Friday night at Raymond C. Hand Park.

Austin Peay (5-3) scored the game’s first four runs. Sophomore Cody Hudson opened the Govs offensive effort with a leadoff home run in the first inning. Austin Peay added three runs in the fourth – one run on junior Jon Clinard’s single and two more on sophomore John Hogan’s single to left center.

Eastern Michigan (6-4) broke up the shutout bid in the fifth with Brett Ohrman’s RBI double. The Eagles tacked on another run in the sixth when a Govs error allowed a run to score, cutting the lead to 5-2.

The Govs broke the game open with their five-run sixth inning that was helped by an Eagles error. Freshman Jordan Hankins hammered a ball right at the EMU first baseman who turned to start a double play at second base. However, his throw sailed wide of the fielder, allowing the inning to continue.

Tyler ChildressJunior Tyler Childress plated the inning’s first run with his RBI single. Three batters later, freshman Matt Wollenzin brought home another run with a RBI single. The bases were still loaded for Blanchard who sent the ball to the wall in right center, emptying the bases and putting game out of reach.

Blanchard finished the second game 2-for-3 with 3 RBI. Clinard and Wollenzin each had two hits and a RBI.

Govs starter Zach Toney (1-0) picked up the victory after allowing one run on three hits over five innings, striking out seven.

Zach ToneyEastern Michigan starter Steve Weber (1-1) was tagged for the loss after allowing four runs on eight hits over 3.2 innings. Six different EMU hitters recorded a hit in the contest.

Austin Peay returns to action with a 2:30pm, Saturday contest against Alabama A&M.
