Poor shootings, turnovers lead to Govs demise in OVC Tournament semifinals

Nashville, TN – Morehead State held Austin Peay State University to just 31.5 percent shooting and forced 17 turnovers as the Eagles claimed a 68-49 decision in the Ohio Valley Conference tournament semifinals, Friday night, in Municipal Auditorium.

The Eagles now will play Tennessee Tech, an upset winner against No. 1 seed Murray State, 64-59, also Friday night.

Morehead State, which improved to 23-9 overall, took control from the outset, running out to a 10-0 lead and it forced the Governors to play catch up the rest of the night. The Governors got as close as six, 28-22, in the first half but turnover and poor field-goal shooting allowed the Eagles to hold a 32-22 at halftime.

In the second half, the Governors scratched their way back to a 45-38 deficit with 9:30 left. But a four-point Morehead State trip resulting from an unexplained bench technical foul on Austin Peay and a Demonte Harper gave the Eagles a 49-38 lead.

The Governors would never recover, unable to get closer than nine points the game’s remainder as Morehead State, led by Harper and OVC Player of the Year Kenneth Faried, pushed the lead to as much as 25 points.

Harper, a first-team All-OVC selection, finished with 25 points while Faried, the nation’s leading rebounder, added 12 points and 21 rebounds.

Austin Peay, which fell to 20-13, had just one player reach double figures, Justin Blake, who had 13 points off the bench. The 49 points represented a season low for the Governors.
