IRS says more Tennesseans E-filing their own Tax Returns

Internal Revenue Service - IRSNashville, TN – With five weeks left before the April 15th tax filing deadline, the Internal Revenue Service reports that Tennesseans are e-filing tax returns in record numbers.

Through March 7th, the IRS has received nearly 1,469,000 electronic returns from Tennesseans, an increase of 3.8 percent over last year at this time. But the largest increase is in the number of taxpayers filing from their own computers. Nearly 712,000 Tennessee filers have e-filed self-prepared returns, an increase of 9.8 percent over last year at this time.

“E-filing is fast, easy and safe, and it’s free for most filers,” said IRS spokesman Dan Boone.

Filers with household income of $58,000 or less can use brand-name tax software free at www.irs.gov through the IRS Free File program. All filers can use the free Fillable Forms option.

Taxpayers who need help filing and whose household income was less than $52,000 or who are age 60 or older can visit one of 140 free tax help sites in 44 Tennessee counties.

The help sites are staffed by IRS-certified volunteers who will prepare and e-file tax returns free. Call 1.800.906.9887 for site hours and locations.
