APSU Lady Govs Volleyball beats Gardner-Webb at Scenic City Showdown

Austin Peay State University Lady Govs - APSUChattanooga, TN – Freshman middle blocker Kaylee Taff posted a team-best 13 kills to lead Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team to a come-from-behind 3-2 (25-22, 22-25, 15-25, 25-16, 15-11) victory against Gardner-Webb, Friday afternoon, in the opening match of the Scenic City Showdown at MacLellan Gym.

Austin Peay (3-6) won the opening set in wire-to-wire fashion only to watch Gardner-Webb (3-6) grab the lead when it won the second and third sets.

The Runnin’ Bulldogs overcame a five-point deficit to win the third set, then opened the third set with a 7-1 run and never looked back.

Austin Peay countered by winning the fourth set in wire-to-wire fashion again, posting 15 kills and a .300 attack percentage. Gardner-Webb scored the opening point in the fifth set and maintained its lead until it committed back-to-back errors to give APSU a 7-6 lead.

The Lady Govs fended off a pair of ties and used a block by sophomore Ashley Slay and Kristen Stucker to build a three-point lead at 13-10 and would hold on to win the match.

Freshman middle blocker Kaylee Taff led Austin Peay with a 13-kill, seven-block performance. Slay (11 kills) and freshman Cecily Gable (10 kills) also reached double-digit kill territory.

Austin Peay despite being held to a .155 attack percentage, the first time in 2015 it has won when being held below a .200 attack percentage.

Sophomore Ashley Slay had 11 kills and two blocks in the win while freshman Cecily Gable finished with 10 kills and a block.

Senior Aubrey Marsellis and freshman Kristen Stucker shared the setting duties in Friday’s match. Marsellis finishing with 23 assists and seven kills while Stucker had 24 assists and four blocks.

“It wasn’t a pretty match but it was a good team win. We didn’t get into a rhythm until the fourth set and rode it to the win. Kaylee (Taff) stepped up big in the middle today and that was encouraging,” stated APSU Volleyball head coach Taylor Mott.

Tyra Montour led Gardner-Webb with 14 kills.

Austin Peay continues its stay at the Scenic City Showdown with a 9:00am (CT), Saturday contest against UAB.
