Clarksville, TN – Unable to carry the momentum from the previous match, APSU women’s tennis team dropped its Ohio Valley Conference home opener against SIU Edwardsville, 6-1, Friday.
The win moves the newcomer to 7-2 overall in 2016, all coming at the top spot in the order.
The Cougars (10-4) got off to a hot start by winning two of three doubles matches, with the third between Claudia Yanes Garcia and Brittney Covington vs. Sierra Halverson and Ann-Christine Link going unfinished. At No. 1, Mia Frogner and Madeline Hill knocked off Lidia and Helena Kuppig, 6-4, while Aranda and Morgan Steffes defeated Hannah Tatlock and Isabela Jovanovic, 6-0.
SIUE cruised in singles play over the Govs (2-7), beginning with Frogner handing Claudia just her second loss of the season, 6-4, 6-4. At No. 3, Hill overcame Kuppig, 6-2, 6-0, followed by victories for Monique Krutak over Tatlock, 6-2, 6-0, Link over Covington, 6-3, 7-6(1) and McKenzie Thomas over Jovanovic, 6-1, 6-3.
Austin Peay wraps up its homestand Saturday against Eastern Illinois, with first serve scheduled for 10:00am, at the Foy Fitness Center Courts.
