APSU Football’s career passing leader Brian Baker passes away

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University (APSU) has learned that Brian Baker, holder of more than a dozen passing records for the Governors football team, passed away July 26th, 2018 at the age of 37.

A Loganville, Georgia native, Baker was a four-year starter and three-year captain for the Govs under center, throwing for 5,587 yards and 48 touchdowns during his career. His 40 completions for 438 yards against Virginia-Wise in 1999 remain school records nearly 20 years later, and he’s the only player in school history with five touchdown passes in multiple contests (against Kentucky Wesleyan in 2001 and Campbellsville in 1999).

APSU Football - Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – The Austin Peay State University football team racked up a school record 644 total yards of offense against Tennessee State, Saturday at Fortera Stadium, but suffered a heartbreaking 41-40 loss in the final seconds after taking the lead with 1:05 remaining on the clock.

Austin Peay freshman quarterback JaVaughn Craig threw for 322 yards, 5 touchdowns and rushed for 144 yards in loss to Tennessee State at Fortera Stadium.

Former APSU Football Coach Bill Schmitz Dies

 

Austin Peay State University Governors Sports - APSUTampa, FL – Former Austin Peay State University coach Bill Schmitz has died at the age of 59. His death was confirmed Monday following an apparent suicide jump from the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Tampa.

A longtime coach, Schmitz had a lengthy coaching resume that included stops at Cincinnati, Rice, Vanderbilt and Eastern Michigan before getting his first head coaching job with the United States Coast Guard Academy.

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Senior quarterback Jake Ryan, of the Austin Peay State University football team, has been named the Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.

Ryan re-wrote the Austin Peay record book, Saturday, against Jacksonville State. He was 40-of-61 passing – setting Austin Peay records for pass completions and attempts – for a career-high 375 yards and three touchdowns.

Austin Peay Governors Football are on the road this weekend to face No. 15/18 Virginia Tech

Austin Peay State University GovernorsBlacksburg, VA – In the last three years Austin Peay has played Big 10 (Wisconsin) and Big East (Cincinnati) programs for the first time in University history. This weekend the Governors will play an Atlantic Coast Conference school for the first time when they travel to Blacksburg, VA, to face Virginia Tech.

Kickoff will occur 12:34pm, CDT from Lane Stadium, considered one of most difficult places in the country to play for visiting teams. For a second straight week, APSU will have a game broadcast by ESPN3. John Sadak and John Gregory will have the call while Rontina McCann will serve as sidelines reporter.

Nashville Sounds lose in 10 Innings to Memphis Redbirds 5-4

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN – The cross-state rival Memphis Redbirds defeated the Sounds for the second straight evening, recording a 5-4, 10-inning victory over Nashville in front of 7,888 fans on Saturday evening at Greer Stadium.

The loss was Nashville’s second in a row following the club’s season-best five-game winning streak.

In the top of the tenth, Steven Hill got things started when he drew a one-out walk from Sounds reliever Juan Perez (4-2). Brock Peterson followed with a potential double-play grounder to shortstop but Edwin Maysonet airmailed Taylor Green at second base to allow runners on the corners with just one out.

Nashville Sounds lose to the Memphis Redbirds 5-1

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN – Shelby Miller struck out nine over six strong innings as the cross-state rival Memphis Redbirds handed the Nashville Sounds a 5-1 defeat in the opener of a season-ending four-game series.

The 21–year-old Miller (11-10) scattered five hits and walked none for his eighth quality start and eleventh victory.

The loss to the Redbirds snapped a season-best five-game winning streak and six-game win streak at home. The top three hitters in the Memphis lineup went a combined 9-for-13 with four runs scored.

Austin Peay State University GovernorsBowling Green, KY – A pair of former rivals will open the 2012 season, 6:00pm, Saturday, when Austin Peay travels to Bowling Green, KY, to play Western Kentucky.

Western Kentucky was a charter member of the Ohio Valley Conference from 1948-81 before becoming a football independent. They rejoined the OVC briefly as an associate member before moving to the Gateway Football Conference-that run included the 2002 I-AA National Championship.
