Three Montgomery County Sheriff officials participate in St. Jude Half Marathon

Montgomery County Sheriff's Office - MCSOMontgomery County, TN – Investigator Jeffrey Morlock, Deputy Stephanie Price and Lt. Sonny Goodowens completed the 2014 St. Jude Half Marathon in Memphis, TN last weekend raising over $7,900 for the charity.

“Over 18,000 runners raised more than $6 million for the St. Jude Children’s hospital at this event,” Morlock said, adding that the hospital never charges families for services – it relies solely on donations to operate. “It costs about $2 million per day to run the hospital.”

Fort Campbell Strike Soldier graduates Air Assault School despite Amputation

2nd Brigade Combat Team - StrikeFort Campbell KY, 101st Airborne Division

Fort Campbell, KY – For almost 12-miles he has been carrying about 35-pounds of gear. He sees a clock in the near distance with red digital numerals closing in on the three-hour mark, the time limit for the near half marathon march.

He wants to sprint to the finish line, but his face winces with every right step taken. His breaths are heavy and pain can be heard with each inhale. His left leg is in full stride, but his right, being amputated more than six years ago, now pushes forward on a damaged prosthetic; a piston broke a few miles back eliminating fluid motion. He picks up a faster, but still a limping pace.

Sgt. 1st Class Greg Robinson, a combat engineer with Company A, 2nd Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), pours water over himself moments before finishing the12-mile road march for The Sabalauski Air Assault School at Fort Campbell, April 29. Robinson is the first amputee to graduate the school and says, “A disability is only a disability if you let it hold you down.” (U.S. Army photo by Sgt. Joe Padula, 2nd BCT PAO, 101st Abn. Div.)

5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) Soldier continues to break records

Written by Maj. Brandon Bissell
5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) Public Affairs

5th Special ForcesClarksville, TN – Most people consider completing a half marathon or full marathon once in their lifetime a major achievement; and rightfully so.

In the case of Marc Dibernardo, a staff sergeant with the U.S. Army, competing in these events, in what most would consider extreme conditions, is a way to raise awareness and support to causes that are very dear to him – wounded warriors.

What is so extreme about the way he competes in races you may ask? Consider the fact that he races wearing either a gas mask or full military gear (including helmet, body armor, and boots). It is safe to say that either of these scenarios would cause significant impairments for the average racer.

Dibernardo has broken world records wearing both.

Staff Sgt. Marc Dibernardo, a member of the U.S. Army, crosses the finish line of the Go Commando Half-Marathon in Clarksville, Tenn., Oct. 20, 2012, in a time of 1 hour and 51 minutes. Although, not yet officially confirmed by the Guinness Book of World Records, the finishing time was nine minutes faster than the record established by Guinness. In order to qualify for the record he had to complete the race in full military gear; including uniform, helmet, body armor, and boots. (Photo courtesy of Maj. Brandon Bissell)
