Property Tax Relief for Veterans, Disabled and Elderly Homeowners – House Bill 20/Senate Bill 23 (Sen. Mark Green (R-Clarksville) is our attempt to undo the changes made to this program in 2015 by the passage of the “Save the Tax Relief Act”, sponsored by Rep. John Ragan (R-Oak Ridge).

“Tyler Head” bill passes the House and is also headed to the Governor

Tennessee State Representative - District 67Nashville, TN – Several bills sponsored by State Representative Joe Pitts (D-Clarksville) moved along in committees last week. This is a general update on the bills and events on the Hill from this week.

House Bill 2616/Senate Bill 2635 The #SayDyslexia bill has now passed both the Senate and the House and is headed to the Governor for his signature. The bill will address early screening and intervention for the students with attributes of dyslexia.

Veterans Property Tax Relief Bill Advances

Attorney General Opinion regarding the use of Veterans Income in Calculating Property Tax Relief

Tennessee State Representative - District 67Nashville, TN – On February 3rd, 2016, I requested the State Attorney General Herbert Slatery to review and issue a legal opinion on the property tax relief legislation (Public Chapter 481) passed last year.

On Tuesday, March 29th, we received the following opinion from the Attorney General attached at the bottom of this article.

House Bill 1410/Senate Bill 1484 (Senator Mark Green (R-Clarksville) passed both the Senate Local Government Committee and the House Local Sub-Government Committee on March 30th.

Tennessee State Representative - District 67Nashville, TN – Several bills sponsored by Tennessee State Representative Joe Pitts (D-Clarksville) moved along in committees last week. This is a general update on the bills and events on the Hill from last week.

“Tyler Head law” bill picks up support. House Bill 1514/Senate Bill 1730 (Sen. Kerry Roberts, R-Springfield) the bill that will create the memorial sign program in honor and memory of innocent victims killed by drunk and/or impaired drivers, known as the Tyler Head Bill, passed the Senate Transportation Committee and is headed to Senate Floor for a vote.

It is also scheduled for the House Finance, Ways and Means Sub Committee on March 9th.

Tennessee House Republicans reject Commitment to Property Tax Relief for Veterans, Seniors and Disabled

 

Tennessee House DemocratsNashville, TN – Tennessee House Democrats yesterday introduced and fought for legislation that would reaffirm the state’s commitment to property tax relief for the disabled, veterans and seniors. The proposed amendment was filed in response to HB1197, sponsored by Oak Ridge Representative John Ragan.

The sponsor conceded that the bill significantly cuts a program of property tax relief for veterans, the disabled and seniors. Democratic caucus members fought against the bill and the cuts. «Read the rest of this article»

Speaker Pro Tempore Curtis Johnson Appointed to Chair Legislative Task Force on Tennessee’s Veterans

 

State of TennesseeNashville, TN – Speaker Beth Harwell (R-Nashville) announced the appointment of Speaker Pro Tempore Curtis Johnson (R-Clarksville) to chair a newly created legislative task force on veterans’ affairs.

In light of problems facing the federal Department of Veterans Affairs, Johnson and the task force will evaluate how veterans are being affected and make recommendations on what can be done through state government to provide necessary support.
