Instant Peay Play - APSU SportsClarksville, TN – The dream of having a chance to play in the major leagues could become reality this week for several Austin Peay State University (APSU) baseball players, with the 2019 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft running June 3rd through June 5th in Secaucus, NJ.

The APSU Govs have a long history in the draft — dating back to the Govs first draft selection in the 1972 draft, Tim Burns, who went in the second round — and this year’s 40-round draft should be no different.

Instant Peay Play: APSU Spring sports earning some early accolades

 

Instant Peay Play - APSU SportsClarksville, TN – Some of Austin Peay State University’s spring sports and athletes have gotten some early praise and recognition for their respective upcoming seasons, as several more teams are just days away from starting their seasons.

Off to a quick 3-0 start this spring, the APSU women’s tennis team was picked as co-favorite to win the Ohio Valley Conference regular-season title, as they picked up six of nine first-place votes in the conference’s pre-season poll – while the other co-favorite Murray State picked up the other three first place votes.

APSU Baseball downs Clemson 6-3

APSU BaseballClemson, SC – Austin Peay State University pitchers Michael Costanzo and Brett Newberg did not allow a run after the fourth inning as APSU’s baseball team used an early offensive onslaught to down No. 5 Clemson, 6-3, in nonconference action, Friday night, at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

Austin Peay (30-20) broke out to a 4-0 lead in the first two innings, using four singles to score two runs in the first before hitting a pair of solo home runs in the fourth inning.

APSU Baseball shuts out SIU Edwardsville, 7-0

APSU BaseballEdwardsville, IL – For a second straight game, Austin Peay State University saw a trio of pitchers combine to post a shutout in a 7-0 Ohio Valley Conference victory against SIU Edwardsville, Friday night at the Simmons Baseball Complex.

Starter Michael Costanzo (8-1) had to work his way through the first three innings, facing 13 batters.

APSU BaseballClarksville, TN – On a day Austin Peay State University’s baseball team honored one of its alumni, starter Jacques Pucheu struck out a nine batters and the offense supplied three home runs in an 8-4 Ohio Valley Conference victory against UT Martin, Saturday at Raymond C. Hand Park.

Prior to the game, Austin Peay (24-19, 14-9 OVC) recognized alumnus Stephen Huff, who threw the ceremonial first pitch to help raise awareness for lung cancer.

Instant Peay Play: Four names added to pantheon of APSU Baseball Draft Picks

 

Instant Peay Play - APSU SportsClarksville, TN – This past week in New York City, Major League Baseball held its annual amateur draft with four Austin Peay State University (APSU) baseball players having their names called, bring the all-time total to 40 players selected in the draft from APSU since the first Gov was drafted in 1972.

Juniors Ridge Smith (catcher), Logan Gray (third base), Garrett Copeland (second base) and senior pitcher Jared Carkuff were chosen in the 12th, 13th, 30th and 35th rounds, respectively, marking the second time Austin Peay had has as many as four players drafted at one time – and trailing only the 2013 MLB draft were the Govs had five players picked.

Austin Peay State University Governors Sports - APSUClarksville, TN – A day after Gary McClure became the first Ohio Valley Conference baseball coach in history to record 800 career victories, Austin Peay State University has announced it has signed its longtime coach to a four-year extension through the 2017-18 season.

McClure, who has led Austin Peay baseball to three straight NCAA tournaments and six overall, became only the 28th active coach with 800 career victories, Sunday, when the Governors defeated Iowa, 7-4.

Austin Peay State University Baseball’s Craig Massoni, Tyler Rogers sweep OVC Postseason Awards

 

Austin Peay State UniversityJackson, TN – For the third time in program history Austin Peay State University’s baseball team can celebrate a sweep of the Ohio Valley Conference’s top awards. Junior first baseman Craig Massoni was named the league’s Player of the Year and senior closer Tyler Rogers was named its Pitcher of the Year at the annual OVC Baseball Awards Banquet held Tuesday night.

“I’m not sure I have a word that is good enough to describe what these two men meant to our team,” said Austin Peay head coach Gary McClure. “Having Tyler involved in 27 decisions over 42 wins is incredible. And on the other hand, Craig was a guy who hit almost .500 in league play and didn’t do it with singles – he did it with doubles and home runs.
