Eastern Illinois comes to town with OVC tourney life on the line

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – If ever a team was in a must-win situation it is Eastern Illinois.

The Panthers come to town for Thursday’s 7:30pm, meeting with Austin Peay needing to win both road games this weekend at APSU and Tennessee State. The Panthers are currently ninth at 4-12 (9-18 overall) in the Ohio Valley Conference standings.

Governors win overtime game againest Eastern Illinois

Austin Peay State University GovernorsCharleston, IL – Eastern Illinois was unable to hold on to a 13 point second half lead as they fell to Austin Peay, 77-73 in overtime, on Saturday night.  EIU dropped to 3-5, 1-1 in the OVC.  APSU improved to 5-4, 2-0 in the OVC.

The Governors were able to build a seven point lead in the first half as Tyshwan Edmondson drained back-to-back 3-pointers to give APSU a 21-14 lead with 12:47 left in the first half. A pair of free throws by Justin Blake pushed APSU’s lead to 25-16 at the six minute mark. EIU closed the half with a 13-5 run as they trailed 30-29 at the break.

Austin Peay Men’s Basketball at Eastern Illinois

Austin Peay State University GovernorsCharleston, IL – Under Mike Miller, Eastern Illinois has made a steady climb up the Ohio Valley Conference ladder. Last season, the Panthers finished 19-12 overall and 11-7 in the OVC, tying the Govs for third place.

In the 2010-11 preseason poll, the Panther are picked to finish third behind Murray State and Morehead State and just ahead of the Governors. The Panthers host the Govs at 6:00pm, Saturday, at Lantz Arena.

Basketball Govs picked third in OVC preseason poll, Campbell named preseason All-OVC

Austin Peay State University GovernorsNashville, TN – Austin Peay State University men’s basketball team was picked to finish fourth in a preseason Ohio Valley Conference poll of league coaches and sports information directors. Junior forward Anthony Campbell also was voted preseason All-OVC.

This was announced Monday at the OVC Basketball Media Day, hosted at Municipal Auditorium, the new site for the 2010-11 OVC Basketball Tournament. Along with the unveiling of the preseason poll and All-OVC teams, OVC Commissioner Beth DeBauche introduced a number of improvements to Municipal, including a new OVC-branded basketball playing surface.

APSU Men’s Basketball: Governors get off to quick start to defeat Eastern Illinois, 73-60

 

apsugovernorsSenior Wesley Channels scored 20 points to lead Austin Peay men’s basketball team to a 73-60 Ohio Valley Conference win against Eastern Illinois, Saturday, at the Dunn Center. The victory was APSU coach Dave Loos’ 319th win as Governors head man, tying Cal Luther (Murray State 1958-74; UT Martin, 1992-99) for most victories while coaching in the OVC.

The victory improved APSU to 5-4 overall and 2-0 in the OVC while Eastern Illinois slips to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the OVC.

Basketball Governors picked third in preseason All-OVC poll

 

apsugovernorsAustin Peay State University has been picked to finish third in a preseason Ohio Valley Conference poll of league coaches and sports information directors. In addition, senior guard Wesley Channels has been voted preseason All-OVC.

That was announced Thursday in a basketball preseason media-day teleconference.

The Governors, who finished tied for second in the OVC a year ago at 13-5 and lost in the league tourney championship game, received 114 points, leaving them behind league co-favorites Morehead State and Murray State, which not only received 10 first-place votes each but finished with 154 points as well.

Austin Peay has had tremendous success in the league over the last decade, including advancing to the OVC Tournament Championship game in six of the last seven seasons. The Governors claimed that crown in 2008 but came up just short in 2007 (1-point loss) and a year ago (2-point loss in double overtime). «Read the rest of this article»
