Clarksville Parks and Recreation announces Surrender of Clarksville event to be held at Fort Defiance

 

Clarksville Parks and Recreation DepartmentClarksville, TN – On Saturday, February 22nd, 2020, the Fort Defiance Interpretive Center will be hosting a living history event from 10:00am to 3:00pm to commemorate the surrender of Fort Defiance to Union soldiers in 1862.

The surrender of Clarksville was a significant event in Civil War history, opening the South to Union forces and the capture of Nashville. Uniformed soldiers will provide living history and cannon firing demonstrations. Visitors are invited to tour the permanent exhibit and view the film, “Crossroads of Change.”

Austin Peay State University to host talk, symposium on Clarksville, African-Americans and the Civil War

 

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – Upon issuing the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, more than three million slaves in Confederate areas were recognized as free by the Union.

The Union army wasted little time recruiting those newly freed men into service, with some 1,800 Clarksville residents answering the call, joining the Union army as members of the United States Colored Troops (USCT) in ceremonies on the Clarksville public square.

APSU History Students present new research at Fort Defiance

 

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – Members of the Austin Peay State University History Club recently had the opportunity to present new research related to Fort Defiance at the historical site’s newest event, titled “Fresh Research, New Discoveries.”

A partnership between APSU’s History Club, Phi Alpha Theta history honors society and Fort Defiance, and funded through a Student Academic Success Initiative grant from APSU faculty senate, “Fresh Research, New Discoveries” saw Austin Peay students John Schuler and Jenny Brown explore the histories of African American men and women during the Civil War.

Fort Defiance to host Civil War Recruitment Day

 

Clarksville Parks and Recreation DepartmentClarksville, TN – Experience history in action at the Fort Defiance Interpretive Center’s Civil War Recruitment Day on Saturday, July 30th from 10:00am to 3:00pm.

Come spend the day as re-enactors conduct a historical “recruiting” event. Throughout the day, children can visit the Commanding Officers to enlist into either the Confederate or Union Armies and then drill with the soldiers before receiving their “discharge” papers.
