Newman leads Lady Govs soccer, named Athlete of the Week

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Senior goalkeeper Carley Newman, of the Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team, recorded her season’s sixth shutout, Friday, and has been named the Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.

Carley NewmanThe Memphis, TN, native made two saves against Jacksonville State in the Lady Govs, 1-0, Ohio Valley Conference win – ensuring Austin Peay its first-ever winning season.

Newman has been solid as a rock in net for the Lady Govs all season, with her 0.47 goals-against-average ranking 11th nationally.

The Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week is selected by the APSU Sports Information staff each Tuesday during the academic year. Copies in a Flash, of Clarksville, sponsors the award.

Other notable performances by Austin Peay athletes included:

  • Ilyanna Hernandez, a junior outside hitter on the volleyball team, recorded a career-high 21 kills in the Lady Govs five-set victory at Tennessee State, finishing the night with a .320 attack percentage. She also had two service aces in the match. Earlier in the week, Hernandez she had 11 kills at Eastern Kentucky.
  • Ryan Key, a senior punter on the football team, averaged 47.0 yards per punt, Saturday, against Tennessee Tech. He was named honorable mention punter by the College Football Performance Awards. It was his fifth-straight game with a 40-yard or better punting average and his 43.7 yard average is sixth-best in the Football Championship Subdivision.
  • Senior Luke Sherrod, of the men’s golf team, led the Govs to third-place finish at the rain-shortened Telich/Sunlife Financial. Sherrod finished eighth with a 72-73–145, for his season’s first top-10 finish. He leads the Govs with a 71.75 stroke average.
