Flood Update

City of ClarksvilleClarksville, TN – City and County officials met this morning with the Montgomery County Emergency Management Agency staff to assess the status of potential flooding of the Cumberland River and Red River.

EMA Director Steve Jones said the projected high water level for the Cumberland River is down considerably, and in his opinion, the situation is manageable.

At 2:00am, the Cumberland River level was 46.7 feet. Flood level for the river is 46 feet and a levels of 53 to 55 feet is where the water reaches Riverside Drive but not flood it. Jones said he expects the crest to be “well below” 50 feet.

The Red River level was 38.7 feet at 2:00am, and the high waters have crested at the Port Royal area. Jones noted that the level was some 11 feet lower than last year’s flooding of the Red River.

Jones said much was learned during last year’s flood, so this week proactive measures were taken to help residents and businesses prepare for more severe flooding.

“We can look at this as a great exercise in working together,” he said.

About 90 volunteers helped fill sandbags for four hours Wednesday evening at the city Street Department. Approximately 6,000 of the sandbags were distributed and about 2,000 sandbags remain.
