Austin Peay Lady Govs drop doubleheader to OVC leading UT Martin Skyhawks

Austin Peay State University Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay played Ohio Valley Conference leading Tennessee Martin close on Wednesday night, at Cheryl Holt Field, but two big late-inning scoring outbursts help lift the Skyhawks to a sweep of the Lady Govs, 7-3 and 5-4.

In Game 1, UT Martin (26-12, 15-2 OVC) only led 3-2 heading into the top of the fourth inning, but the Skyhawks scored four times in the inning, to extend its lead out to 7-2.

Austin Peay’s final run would come in the bottom of the sixth inning on Paige Neely’s first home run of the season.

UT Martin opened up the game with two runs in the first inning, with Leah Taylor driving in one run with a double and the other scoring on the first of three Austin Peay errors in the contest.

Paige NeelyAustin Peay scored once in the bottom of the first on a double by Neely, which scored Lauren de Castro – who opened the inning with a single.

Both teams scored single runs in the third inning, with the Skyhawks scoring on Bain RBI single and the Lady Govs scoring on a Neely single scoring de Castro.

Neely would lead the Lady Govs with three hits and three RBI, with de Castro adding two hits.

UT Martin was led by Wade, Taylor and Bain, who all recorded two hits each.

Amy MillsIn Game 2, like the opener, UT Martin jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

Austin Peay answered back with a four-runs in the bottom half of the inning, with Neely and Amy Mills each driving in one run, while Ashley Bolda drove in two – all on singles.

The score would remain 4-2 until the top of the fifth inning, when the Skyhawks scoring three runs on four straight hits to open the inning.

Lauren de CastroAustin Peay would threaten in the bottom of the inning, getting back-to-back one-out singles by Mills and Morgan Brewer, but UT Martin pitcher Casey Vincent got the next two Lady Govs on strike to end the threat.

Mills had three hits to lead Austin Peay – including a double – while de Castro extended her personal hitting streak to 11 games with a first inning single.
