Custom House Museum September 2012 Exhibits and Activities

Clarksville, TN – The Customs House Museum and Cultural Center is located in historic downtown Clarksville, Tennessee. Come explore an entire city block featuring large gallery spaces filled with fine art, science and history.

In the month of September, the Museum will feature The Amazing Maze, Inspirations and Origins, Subtle Manipulations: The Vision of Greg Sand, Let’s Find: Benches and Chairs and so much more.

Exhibits

The Amazing Maze
The Amazing Maze is back! The life-size maze has a Civil War theme to go along with our Civil War Remedies exhibit and other Civil War stories in the Kimbrough Gallery. See it through September.

Inspirations and Origins
This juried exhibition of work of the Cumberland Furniture Guild features hand-crafted furniture in both traditional and whimsical styles. Through October 28th.

Selections from the Biennial: Tennessee Watercolor Society
See the touring exhibit of works exhibited in the 2012 Tennessee Watercolor Society Juried Exhibition. Through September 20th.

Subtle Manipulations: The Vision of Greg Sand
Greg’s work explores the issues of existence, time, and death. His digital photography addresses the nature of the medium and its role in defining reality. An Austin Peay graduate, Sand has been called one of “the most exciting new artists emerging in the world of photography.” Through the month of October.

Camille Engel: Impressions of Reality

Her work is published and mentioned in national magazines like American Art Collector, The American Artist, and Southern Living, and also hangs in corporate, public and private collections such as the renowned Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, Nashville, TN. See her art September 12th through November 4th.

Activities

Let’s Find: Benches and Chairs

September 12th & 13th, 10:30am–11:30am
Children 3 – 5 years old and their grown-ups are invited to explore the museum from a child’s perspective. This month we will be looking for unusual benches and chairs in Inspirations & Origins, an exhibit by the Cumberland Furniture Guild. We will also read a story and make a craft. This activity is free to museum members. Non-members pay the regular adult admission of $7.00, plus $2.00 per child. Siblings are always welcome.

Sunday Family Fun: Fabulous, Fantastic Furniture!

Sunday, September 23rd, 1:00pm–5:00pm
Come explore the Cumberland Furniture Guild exhibit and then join us in the Coca Cola Café to design and make some of your own furniture with paper, small cardboard boxes, craft sticks, and pictures from magazines. This drop-in activity is free with your paid admission or museum membership.

The Museum will be closed Monday, September 3rd in observance of Labor Day.

About the Customs House Museum

Located in the heart of historic downtown Clarksville, Tennessee, the Customs House Museum and Cultural Center is the State’s second largest general museum. With over 35,000 square feet of the region’s best hands-on activities and special events…people of all ages agree – the Customs House Museum is well worth the stop!

The Explorer’s Gallery is packed with fun, learning and fantasy in Aunt Alice’s Attic, McGregor’s Market and kitchen, and of course – the Bubble Cave! Finally, get “all aboard” to see our fantastic model trains. Our volunteer engineers “ride the rails” every Sunday afternoon from 1:00pm to 4:00pm.

Regular museum hours are 10:00am to 5:00pm Tuesday through Saturday, and 1:00pm to 5:00pm on Sundays. Adult admission is $7.00, Sr. Citizens and College ID $5.00, Ages 6 to 18 $3.00, and under six years and Museum members are free.
