Austin Peay State University Lady Govs Golf in sixth place after first round of OVC Tournament

Austin Peay State University Lady GovsDickson, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s golf team got off to a swift start, Sunday afternoon, in the first round of the Ohio Valley Conference championships but could not maintain the momentum. As a result, the Lady Govs sit in sixth place heading into second round of the championship, being played at GreyStone Golf Club in Dickson, TN.

The Lady Govs shot an opening-round 316. Defending champ Jacksonville State leads after firing a 17-over 305 while Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky are three strokes back at 308. Murray State is in fourth at 312 while Belmont is one shot ahead of the Lady Govs at 315. The Lady Govs, who were among the top four through the first six holes, struggled near the turn and afterward, going 10-over par on holes 9 through 11.

Jessica Cathey“We started out well on the first few holes,” APSU coach Sara Robson said. “We were not making putts but we were hitting fairways and greens. That’s why it was working for us. We hit the ball well (off the tee) all day but we just couldn’t get anything working on the greens. Then you start second guessing you stroke and speed. Usually it is just the speed. Then we made the turn and nine and 10 just were not kind to us. We need to fix our putting issues and go out and play those holes better tomorrow.”

Freshman Jessica Cathey got off to a great start, being at 2-under through the first three holes and being even at the turn, but bogey bug bit her, beginning with No. 9. Still she finished with a 78, tying her for 14th. Four players—Belmont’s Janet Steen, Eastern Kentucky’s Becky Sharpe, Morehead State’s Katie Rice and Jacksonville State’s Ornella Arrizon–are tied for first after shooting 74s. Eleven players were between 74-76.

Lauren Bond“Jessica was leading the tournament before her double and still was near the top after it,” Robson said. “It was the next couple of holes that got her. She needs to work on that.”

Senior Lauren Bond overcame a near nightmarish No. 12 to shoot a 79 as did junior Tala Mumford, who ended with a double bogey.

Senior Tabitha Beard just could not get anything to drop on the green and finished with an 80 while junior Rachel Deaton, also struggling with her putter, shot an 81.

“Tabitha just could not any putts to drop,” Robson said. “She played much better than her 80. Tala scrambles like Tala scrambles. She hit some great shots and made some good putts, but she just needs to put it together on the greens tomorrow.

“I thought Lauren and Rachel played well today. It took Lauren about six holes to figure out the speed of the green, about five holes too many. She knows that. Once she got the speed of the greens, she started playing, started putting much better.

“Rachel just got on a bogey train today. She three-putted quite a bit. We got to get her speed going but we think we got a few things figured out.
