Austin Peay State University Lady Govs - APSUMurray, KY – Junior Morgan Gardner tied her career best with a 2-over 74, Monday, and sits in a second-place tie heading to the final day of the Murray State Invitational.

Gardner’s 74 matched her 74 a year ago in the final round of the F&M Bank APSU Invitational. She and Southern Illinois’ Brooke Cusumano are just one shot off the pace of Murray State’s Sydney Trimble.

That was the good news for the Lady Govs. The bad news was that Gardner was playing as an individual.

The Lady Govs’ team could only manage a pair of sub-80s scores and shot a 318 and sits in sixth place heading into the tourney’s final 18 holes.

The normally positive APSU coach, Sara Robson, was more than a little frustrated with her team, Monday.

“First, let me say I am extremely proud of Morgan Gardner,” she said. “With the way the wind was blowing along with the length of this course, her short game was awesome; she stuck to her game plan.

“But I was disappointed with how we played as a team. We had ideas of what we wanted to do and a plan. We just didn’t do as good job of executing the plan.”

The two APSU sub-80 team scores came from their freshmen, twins Taylor and Ashton Goodley fired 78s—it was Ashton’s first tournament round after Taylor played last week in Pawley’s Island.

“Taylor played well but could not get any putts to drop,” Robson said. “This was Ashton’s first round and she was pretty nervous to start out. She really settled down and was playing pretty well until the final three holes (all bogeys).”

Senior Jessica Cathey and junior Amber Bosworth, playing in her first tourney since late last October, each shots 81s while the long-hitting junior Morgan Kauffman, struggling off the tee, shot an 82. Junior Kelsey Schutt, joining Gardner as an individual, shot an 80.

Murray State leads the tourney, shooting a 303, with Southern Illinois second at 306. SIU Edwardsville is third at 313 while Belmont is at 314 and Tennessee Tech at 316 in the 12-team event.

“Tomorrow, we have to do a better job of executing our game plan,” Robson said. “We just need to relax and play with confidence—believe in ourselves and not try to guide our shots.

“We need to hit more fairways—we need to be more accurate—and if we do that it will allow us to reach more greens.”
