Sevierville, TN – With junior Erik Hedberg and senior Chris Baker charting under-par rounds, Austin Peay State University men’s golf team shot a two-over 290 to reside in sixth place after Day 1 of the Fourth Annual Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate, being played at the Sevierville Golf Club River Course.Hedberg fired a 2-under 70 while Baker added 1-under 71 as the Governors were eight shots back of leader Murray State (282).
Hedberg’s round was highlighted by an eagle 3 on the 560-yard No. 7. Baker, meanwhile, was second during the day with birdies on Par 5s with three.
Sophomore Justin Arens fired a 2-over 74 while senior Austin Kramer, who tied for third on the day in pars (15), couldn’t get any birdie putts to fall and finished at 3-over 75. Senior Tyler Phillips ended the first day with a 78.
Freshman Sean Butscher, playing as an individual, tied for first in pars with 16 and finished at 2-over 74.
In addition to the Govs and Murray State, three other Ohio Valley Conference teams are competing—Jacksonville State and host Tennessee Tech (t8th/296) and Tennessee State (11th/305). Although Murray State leads by six heading to the second day, the Govs are bunched with Oakland (288), Western Kentucky (288), Southern Illinois (299) and Wright State (299) in the 12-team event played at 6,972 yards on the first day of the three-day, 54-hole event.
“We had to grind out our round today,” APSU coach Robbie Wilson said. “Erik played 15 holes of great golf and Baker played well for the most part all day.
“We are in the hunt and that’s all that counts. Tomorrow is moving day and we look to do just that.”
