Land Between the Lakes , KY/TN – The storm Friday created downed trees and power lines blown over at Land Between the Lakes. The U.S. Forest Service continues to assist visitors and address the hazards.
Forest Service crews began accessing damages at 7:00pm Friday as a southeast moving storm brought high winds, lightening and heavy rains Friday evening. Land Between the Lakes staff ask people to postpone visits to the area while crews locate and clear hazards.
“We have crews working all across Land Between the Lakes that continue to find new hazards and we need the public to avoid the area while we locate and address safety concerns,” said Tina Tilly, U.S. Forest Service area manager.
“We know people want to come out and enjoy this beautiful place. Right now, we need time to find and address hazards. Safety is our priority,” Tilly stated.
The most extensive damage is in the northern portions of Land Between the Lakes. Most of the Kentucky portion is without power and could remain without power for an extended time. Many campgrounds are without power and are now closed until further notice while crews secure downed power lines and remove trees. The Forest Service continues to find structures damaged in the storm.
Forest Service crews are highly trained at felling hazardous trees and ask the public to avoid trees snagged and ready to fall. The Forest Service reminds the public that it is extremely dangerous to approach downed or damaged power lines. Do not attempt to clear debris from any power line. All power lines should be treated as energized and deadly.
