The cover feature, the “Twilight Charm Project,” tapped into the cultural phenomenon sweeping the country in 2009, meeting readers where their interests already were. “Lily and Her Sparkle” shared a heartwarming local story, the kind of personal profile that gives the magazine its warmth.
“Dollars & Sense” offered practical financial guidance that carried particular weight in the spring of 2009, as the recession pressed on households across the country. The magazine's reassuring, down-to-earth approach to money matters gave readers a measure of steadiness in an anxious time. The health pages added cosmetic guidance with “Don't Scar Your Facelift Scar,” and a Marketplace feature pointed toward local shopping.
The recurring departments round out an April number that met readers where their interests and worries actually were — a nod to the Twilight craze on one page and steady help navigating a tough economy on the next, both a welcome escape and the practical guidance readers needed to weather an uncertain spring.
Beyond the Twilight cover, a Giving Back feature spotlighted Operation Excel, where on Monday and Wednesday afternoons some fifty Clarksville schoolchildren fill the Abundant Life Outreach Center on Chapel Street with activity. Created in 2006 by Gary Ellis, Jr. and funded primarily through We Build People of the Clarksville YMCA, the community partnership set out to grow the mind, spirit and body of the area's at-risk youth through mentoring and guidance. On a recent visit, the writer found a building that would normally sit empty on a weekday afternoon instead bristling with activity in almost every room.
