The cover feature told a remarkable local story: a five-year-old who took the fight against diabetes all the way to Washington, D.C. — a young advocate whose determination put a national spotlight on a cause close to many Clarksville families' hearts.
The City of Clarksville's Independence Day Celebration got its due as one of the summer's signature community events, previewing the fireworks, music and patriotism that draw crowds together each Fourth of July. “Empowering Local Youth with Group Exercise and Athletics” spotlighted programs helping young people build fitness and confidence together, while “Tick-Borne Illness” delivered timely warm-weather health guidance. A grilled-lime-shrimp recipe and a dental feature, “Got Floss?,” rounded out the issue.
The recurring departments round out a July number that pairs an inspiring cover story with summer celebration and safety — spotlighting a young hero while making sure families can enjoy the season safely, from the fireworks downtown to the tick checks after a hike.
The cover belonged to Garrett, a Clarksville five-year-old who carried the fight against type 1 diabetes all the way to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's bi-annual Children's Congress. Garrett loves baseball and fishing with his dad and was about to start kindergarten at Clarksville Academy; on his backyard play set his smile is pure carefree childhood — though he could do without pricking his finger several times a day to check his blood sugar, and the doctor visits that come with the disease.
