“Project Transformation” profiled a nonprofit whose mission, per its own description, is to transform communities — work centered on children and young people that took on new urgency in a summer when so many of the usual supports had fallen away.

“Urban Ministries” took readers behind the scenes of a major outreach effort in the making: tents erected for shade, cones placed across the parking lots, and the careful preparation that goes into serving the community at scale — the logistics of compassion during a hard season. The food pages kept summer entertaining light with big-batch cocktails, led by Watermelon Cucumber Basil Gimlets, a crowd-friendly recipe built for warm evenings.

The recurring departments round out a midsummer number that balances the weight of the moment with the pleasures of the season — two nonprofits meeting urgent need and a cold cocktail for the porch, a portrait of a community taking care of its own even when the usual ways of doing so had been stripped away, finding new logistics for old compassion.

“Project Transformation” laid out a mission of relationships: transforming communities by engaging children in grades one through six, college-age young adults, and churches in purposeful connection. Each chapter, affiliated with the national organization but governed by its own board, builds ties with partnering churches and recruits the volunteers and young-adult interns who run the program — and every year, the children in it work to improve their literacy and their social-emotional skills, the kind of steady, foundational help that took on new urgency in a summer when so much else had fallen away.
