Gala Civil War Ball Benefits Fort Defiance

Friends of Fort DefianceClarksville, TN – Ladies in antebellum gowns featuring hoop skirts, frills and ruffles danced with gentlemen dressed in blue and gray uniforms. Sounds of the hammered dulcimer, fiddles and guitar accompanied the authentic dances of the Civil War era as the band, Red River Breeze played lilting reels and other music of the times.

Sponsored by the Friends of Fort Defiance, the annual Civil War Ball was held at the Emmanuel Center, 303 Fairview Lane, in Clarksville from 6:00pm to 10:00pm Saturday, January 14th. It was sponsored in part by the Clarksville Montgomery County Civil War Sesquicentennial Committee.

Just What Goes on at a Civil War Ball?

The Second Annual Friends of Fort Defiance Civil War Ball and Dinner was held at Smith-Trahern Mansion, on Saturday, November 13th.

Having never attended a civil war ball before, both my husband Bill and I had little idea of what to expect. Of course, we knew that everyone had to wear period dress and that dinner would precede dancing. Other than that, we were clueless.

We arrived just before the beginning hour of 5:30pm in a soggy rainstorm that was not conducive to wearing a full-length formal gown. My search for the gown had covered three cities and about 75 hours of web searching before I finally settled on a floor-length deep brown strapless gown with a pick-up skirt from Bridal Warehouse in Rivergate. I covered my aging shoulders with a gold sequined wrap centered with a sunray-pointed gold pin with a brown gem at its center. My shoes were strappy copper heels—and I forgot to wear my elbow-length gloves!

The Friends Of Fort Defiance to hold second annual Civil War Ball and Dinner

The Friends Of Fort Defiance‘s Civil War Ball and Dinner will be held on November 13th at the Smith-Trahern Mansion on McClure Street.  This year Friends of the Fort will be conducting a Memorial Service for the Civil War Casualties who are buried in Riverview Cemetery.  The Memorial Service includes a presentation by a color guard and a short devotional talk by a Civil War reverend.

My family and I have been part of Friends of Fort Defiance for 6 years now. They are a very knowledgeable, helpful group of people who want Clarksvillians to know about Fort Defiance and the part it, and the people who inhabited it throughout its many name changes, had on Clarksville during the Civil War era.

Civil War Ball offers an enchanting evening

The Friends of Fort DefianceThe Friends of Fort Defiance held their first Civil War Ball at the Smith Trahern mansion on Saturday evening. While the group has not yet officially discussed it, group President Phyllis Smith hopes that this will become an annual event, and quite possibly a new tourist attraction for the City of Clarksville, as this inaugural evening drew one couple all the way from Illinois.

All of the guests were required to be attired in a period costume, and those who did not have one available, were able to rent one from George Terrell, the owner of Backstage Costume Rental. Because of the additional required expense of renting a costume, the Friends of Fort Defiance kept the cost of tickets for the event fairly low, only $30 per person, for a night of dinner and dancing.
