37 APSU student-athletes conferred degrees Friday

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – A record 1,075 graduate were awarded degree at Austin Peay State University’s 83rd Spring Commencement and 37 were student-athletes.

They were part of graduation ceremonies in the Dunn Center as both a morning and afternoon commencements were held Friday.

The seniors athletes were part of a graduating class that saw record numbers earn Athletics Directors Honor Roll recognition and a department grade-point average that approach 3.0 annually.

Austin Peay Governors vs. Tennessee State

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – A victory against Tennessee State, Saturday, would allow the Govs start 2-0 in the OVC for the first time since 1977.

The Govs-TSU match up will serve as each program’s first of the 2011 Sergeant York Trophy Series. In fact, Tennessee Tech is playing at UT Martin also in a Sgt. York Trophy game on Saturday.

After owning a school-record 26 seniors in 2009, the Govs had half that many (13) in 2010. This season the Govs have even fewer, eight.

Ryan White ran for 132 yards on 27 carries to help the Governors defeat Eastern Kentucky, 23-17 last Saturday.

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – This is Austin Peay’s 39th Ohio Valley Conference season. The Govs are 93-171-2 alltime in OVC play, including 9-29 in OVC openers. The Govs won their OVC opener a year ago, 26-23, against Tennessee State.

After owning a school-record 26 seniors in 2009, the Govs had half that many (13) in 2010. This season the Govs have even fewer, eight.

Austin Peay last won a football game, 26-23, against Tennessee State, September 18th. They enter the contest amidst a 10-game losing streak.

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – This is Austin Peay’s 75th season of college football, including nine non-scholarship seasons (1997-2005). They enter the contest with a 271-468-16 record.

Austin Peay has enjoyed only 18 winning seasons in 74 years of football and only two winning seasons since the turn of the century–a 7-5 mark in 2002 as a non-scholarship program and a 7-4 record in 2007 in Rick Christophel’s first season.

Austin Peay State University GovernorsCincinnati, OH – This is Austin Peay’s 75th season of college football, including nine non-scholarship seasons (1997-2005). They enter the season with a 271-467-16 record.

Austin Peay is 27-45-2 in openers in its previous 74 years of football, including last season’s 38-6 home victory against Cumberland. The Govs have won the season opener five times in the last 16 seasons.

This is the third time Austin Peay has opened the season with Cincinnati, the previous two being in 1985 and 1993.

Govs second football scrimmage to be held on Morgan Brothers Soccer Field

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s football team will scrimmage approximately 9:20am, Saturday.

However, if interested fans show up at Governors Stadium, they will be watching APSU’s track meet.

If they want to find the football scrimmage, they will have to venture out to Morgan Brothers Soccer Field.

For the first time since the former Austin Peay football practice field was converted into the home of the Lady Govs soccer team will APSU’s football team scrimmage on grass—APSU has used it for occasional practices in the past. The Tennessee Titans did use the soccer field for scrimmages when they were in Clarksville for training camp in 2006.

Austin Peay Governors football vs. Murray State Racers

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Thirteen seniors will be honored prior to kickoff on Senior Day.

Since rejoining the Ohio Valley Conference the Governors own a 1-2 record against Murray State. The Govs lost in Murray, 27-17, in 2009.

Austin Peay enters the contest on a six-game losing streak. The Govs have endured at least a six-game losing streak five times since the new millennium, the longest losing streak (eight games) coming in the 2003 season.

Senior running back Terrence Holt made his first career start at running back against UT Martin. Even though he has shared the running back duties with Ryan White for the past two seasons, the latter always has drawn the starting nod until last Saturday.

Stansell earns CFPA Placekicker Award

 

Austin Peay State University GovernorsDavidson, NC – Austin Peay State University’s kicker Stephen Stansell, who tied a school record with four field goals as the Govs rallied for a 26-23 win against Tennessee State, Saturday, has been Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) Placekicker Co-Performer of the Week.

The purpose of the CFPA is to provide the most scientifically rigorous conferments in college football. Teeter, Faulkner recognized with College Football Performance Awards

In addition, tackle Antonio Faulkner was named honorable mention Defensive Line Performer of the Week by the same organization

Aerial trickery helps propel Governors to 38-6 season-opening victory

 

Austin Peay State University GovernorsAlthough Austin Peay State University rolled up more than 300 yards in rushing, it was a bit of aerial trickery that propelled the Governors’ 38-6 season-opening victory against Cumberland, Thursday night, in Governors Stadium.

With the Govs leading just 3-0 early in the second quarter, wide receiver Devin Stark connected with fellow receiver Darryl Miller for a 30-yard to spearhead a three touchdown second quarter as the APSU blew open a close ball game against its NAIA opponent.
