APSU Athletics icon Cheryl Holt inducted to OVC Hall of Fame

 

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsNashville, TN – For nearly 35 years, Cheryl Holt served in the Austin Peay State University (APSU) athletics department in various roles. Holt has been inducted into the Ohio Valley Conference Hall of Fame during ceremonies held in conjunction with the OVC Spring Meetings, Friday.

Inducted into Austin Peay’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 2012, Holt joined the Governors athletics program in 1982 as a tennis coach but was tapped by then-Director of Athletics Johnny Miller to elevate the volleyball program. She served just two seasons as tennis coach, but her tenure as volleyball coach lasted much longer – an impressive 23 seasons.

Former APSU Basketball coach Dave Loos selected for OVC Hall of Fame induction

APSU Men's BasketballBrentwood, TN – Longtime Austin Peay State University men’s basketball head coach and athletics director Dave Loos has been elected to the Ohio Valley Conference Hall of Fame and will be officially inducted at the annual OVC Honors Brunch, Friday, June 1st, 2018 at the DoubleTree Hotel in downtown Nashville.

The Ohio Valley Conference Hall of Fame was organized in 1977 with the intent of honoring the coaches, administrators, faculty and staff that have been associated with the OVC for at least five years and provided extensive and outstanding service to the Conference.

APSU Basketball rallies to defeat Eastern Illinois 73-66 in the OVC Tournament

APSU Men's BasketballClarksville, TN – A dominant second-half effort lifted Austin Peay State University men’s basketball team to a 73-66 win against Eastern Illinois to advance the third-seeded Governors to the semifinals of the 2017-18 Ohio Valley Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament.

The victory pushes the Govs onward to Friday’s OVC semifinals, where they will face second-seeded Belmont in the 9:00pm contest.

APSU Basketball’s Matt Figger named OVC Coach of the Year

APSU Men's BasketballBrentwood, TN – First-year head coach Matt Figger and the dynamic low-post duo of senior Averyl Ugba and freshman Terry Taylor are all new to the Ohio Valley Conference, but they have left an indelible impact on the league.

Tuesday, Figger was named OVC Coach of the Year, while Taylor earned Freshman of the Year honors. Taylor and Ugba, the graduate transfer from Grambling State, both were named First-Team All-OVC and to the All-Newcomer team via a vote of the league coaches and sports information directors.

APSU Athletics Hall of Fame to induct Paul Aaron into Honors Category

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Paul “Slick” Aaron was more than the brother of Dave Aaron. He was an outstanding three-sport athlete in his own right, in particular, in basketball during the late 1940s. He will be honored posthumously, 9:00am, Saturday, when he is inducted into the APSU Athletics Hall of Fame from the Honors category.

When the elder Aaron took over as athletic director and basketball coach in 1946-47, he was fortunate that brother Paul was one of the incoming first-year basketball players.

Doug Stamper, Austin Peay’s ‘Mr. Clutch,’ passes away

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay has learned that Doug Stamper, who was the University’s first All-Ohio Valley Conference basketball selection, has died after a long illness. He was 73 years old.

A Hamilton, Ohio native, Stamper was a member of the last Governors basketball team to compete in the Volunteer State Athletic Association. He also was a member of the first Governors basketball team to compete in the Ohio Valley Conference. Stamper also was a member of the first Governors basketball team to have a black player—L.M. Ellis—on its roster. He was a member of the first Austin Peay athletics team to fly in an airplane. In addition, Stamper was the first Governors basketball player to earn All-OVC.

Former Austin Peay State University star athlete, coach and athletic director George Fisher passes away

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – The man known as “Coach” to many and mentor to many others has passed away.

Dr. George Fisher, who was associated with the Austin Peay athletics program from 1946-77 as a star Austin Peay player, standout coach and later as athletics director, died Saturday night. He was 90 years old.

Born July 9th, 1924, the Greenbrier, TN native came to Austin Peay in the mid-1940s and really never left, being involved with APSU and APSU athletics literally for the rest of his life.

APSU Fans to vote on All-Time Governors Stadium Football Team

 

APSU - Austin Peay State University SportsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University will be “retiring” Governors Stadium, or at least as it is currently configured, at 2013 season’s conclusion when the wrecking balls begin collapsing the home side of the 67-year-old facility to make way for a new construction, including suites, for the 2014 season.

To celebrate such retirement, Austin Peay’s athletics department will honor the venerable facility by naming an All-Time Governors Stadium team.
