If Austin Peay Could Talk: LaNeeça’s Story

 

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – Loving vs. Virginia was a landmark civil rights decision of the U.S. Supreme Court that banned interracial marriage.

Virginia’s interracial marriage law violated the 14th Amendment and in 1967 it became legal for interracial couples to marry in the United States.

Austin Peay State University launches ‘If Austin Peay Could Talk’ project, featuring personal stories of racism

 

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – In the 1970s, LaNeeça Williams watched her family struggle against multiple forms of discrimination. Her parents had married shortly after the Supreme Court’s 1967 decision in the Loving v. Virginia case, which said that laws banning interracial marriage were unconstitutional. Her mother and father were legally allowed to marry, but that didn’t stop people from treating them harshly.
