Staff Sergeant Lawrence Woods of Clarksville was among eight service members killed in a plane crash on October 24th, 1964 and was the first Tennessean to be declared missing in action (MIA) leading up to the Vietnam War. Woods was serving with the 5th Special Forces Group based out of Fort Campbell. The United States Army Staff Sergeant was aboard a C-123 Provider aircraft that crashed when it was struck by enemy fire while resupplying the U.S. Special Forces camp at Bu Prang, Vietnam. This year marked the unit’s 52nd anniversary of its activation, which originally took place September 21st, 1961, at Fort Bragg, NC. Although a time to celebrate, the “reunion” has become much more than just an annual gathering throughout the years. The 5th SFG (A) has a storied history written by very quiet professionals, but more importantly they are a family that encompasses Veterans, past and present, families and friend of the Legion for generations past. ![]() Col. John Brennan, commander of the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Mr. Steve Woods, son of Staff Sgt. Lawrence Woods, Mr. Frank Roe, and Col. Frederick Prins, deputy commander of the 5th SFG (A) join together for a picture at the Group’s 52nd Reunion Picnic 21 held on Gabriel Field on Fort Campbell, Ky., Sept. 21, 2013. Approximately 49 years after Staff Sgt. Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam proclaims POW/MIA Recognition Week
Major Andre and Major James E. Sizemore of Illinois were on a night armed reconnaissance mission when their A-26A Invader aircraft crashed in Xiangkhoang Province, Laos during the Vietnam War. Both men died in the crash but their remains were unaccounted for until April 2013. The Air Force pilots will be returned to their families for burial with full military honors on September 23rd at Arlington National Cemetery. Jon Heinrich Fort Campbell, KY – “After a brief banter and an offer for a cup of steaming hot coffee, a blaring horn can be heard coming from outside. Vietnam Veteran buried after 45 years missingWritten by Sgt. Tracy Weeden Palmer, TN – An unexpected and emotional reunion occurred Monday in Grundy County, Tennessee, when 17 soldiers of the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) escorted the remains of a Vietnam veteran back to his home town and family, after being missing in action for 45 years. The veteran was Spc. Marvin Foster Philips of Palmer, Tennessee. He joined the Army at the age of eighteen and was assigned to the 114th Assault Helicopter Company, 101st Airborne Division, were he was a UH-1B Huey helicopter crew chief. On September 26th, 1966, he departed on a combat assault mission in the Delta region of South Vietnam over Vinh Binh province and was never seen again. ![]() Veterans and service members grieve and salute Spc. Marvin Foster Phillips after it arrives in Tennessee for proper burial. Soldiers of the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade provided Phillips full military honors, to include receiving, guarding and burial details upon his return home, September 24th, 2011. Phillips was buried September 26th, 2011 in Grundy County, TN, exactly 45 years after a fatal helicopter crash in southern Vietnam.
