Neika Smith to transfer from Lady Govs basketball team

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s basketball head coach Carrie Daniels announced Friday sophomore guard Neika Smith has declared her intent to transfer following the conclusion of the current academic semester.

Smith, of Fort Myers, FL, played in 43 games during her three-year career at Austin Peay. She missed the 2008-09 season due to an injury and returned to play 24 games as a redshirt freshman in 2009-10, averaging 1.8 points per game. This past season, Smith played in 19 contests and averaged 1.5 points per game.

“We understand Neika’s desire to transfer and support her decision,” said Daniels. “I wish Neika and her family the best.”

Lady Govs, Golden Eagles renew acquaintances in OVC Tournament semifinals, Friday

Austin Peay State University GovernorsNashville, TN – One of the Ohio Valley Conference’s most-played series will resume when Austin Peay women’s basketball team faces regular-season champion Tennessee Tech in a noon, Friday semifinal contest in the OVC Women’s Basketball Championship at Municipal Auditorium.

Fifth-seeded Austin Peay advanced to the semifinal round with a 71-64 first-round victory against eighth-seeded Murray State and a 78-72 quarterfinal win against fourth-seeded Eastern Illinois. Top-seeded Tennessee Tech received a double-bye and will be playing its first tournament contest.

Austin Peay State University GovernorsNashville, TN – For the third consecutive season, Austin Peay women’s basketball team will meet Eastern Illinois in the Ohio Valley Conference Women’s Basketball Championship. The 2011 tournament edition will pit the two teams against one another in a noon, Thursday, quarterfinal contest at Municipal Auditorium.

Fifth-seeded Austin Peay advanced to the quarterfinal round with a 71-64 first-round victory against eighth-seeded Murray State. Fourth-seeded Eastern Illinois received an first-round bye and will be playing its first tournament contest.

Lady Govs begin Music City Madness with first-round contest against Murray State

Austin Peay State University GovernorsNashville, TN – A classic rivalry will open the 2011 Ohio Valley Conference Women’s Basketball Championship when the fifth-seeded Austin Peay women’s basketball team meets eighth-seeded Murray State in a noon, Wednesday contest at Municipal Auditorium.

Along with a change in venue – a move up 5th street from Bridgestone Arena to Municipal Auditorium – the OVC Tournament will feature a change in format. This season’s tournament is a ladder-style format that rewards the top four teams in the regular-season race. Under this format the fifth through eighth seeds play an opening-round contest. The third and fourth seeds receive a single bye into the quarterfinals while the top two seeds receive a double bye into the semifinals.

Staggering Lady Govs seek to right ship at Murray State

Austin Peay State University GovernorsMurray, KY – Austin Peay women’s basketball team will seek an end to its four-game losing streak when it meets Murray State in a 1:15pm, Saturday contest at CFSB Center.

The Lady Govs have lost each of their four games since returning from the Christmas Break. That streak includes Thursday’s 78-54 loss at UT Martin, which saw Austin Peay shooting just 30.3 percent from the field. The Lady Govs trailed by just five points at halftime, but scored only 26 points in the second frame while making 9-of-34 (26.5 percent) of their field goals.

Lady Govs losing streak hits four with loss at UT Martin

Austin Peay State University GovernorsMartin, TN – Austin Peay women’s basketball team continued its post-Christmas break swoon, falling 78-54 to UT Martin in Ohio Valley Conference action, Thursday night, at the Elam Center. 

UT Martin (8-7, 3-1 OVC) – playing without freshman Heather Butler, the OVC’s leading scorer, who missed the game due to illness – dominated the second half, outscoring Austin Peay (4-13, 3-2) by a 45-26 margin. However, it was a pair of 11-point Skyhawk runs that did in the Lady Govs.

Lady Govs fall to Lipscomb

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – A nearly eight-minute second half drought again proved too much to overcome as Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team dropped a 63-58 non-conference decision to Lipscomb, Wednesday night at the Dunn Center.

Austin Peay (2-8) scored the second half’s first six points and led 27-24 with 18:48 remaining. But the Lady Govs would score just one field goal – a layup by junior Jasmine Rayener at the 13:25 mark – over the next eight minutes as Lipscomb pieced together a 23-2 run to build an 18-point, 47-29 lead with 10:58 left.

Lady Govs open 2010-11 campaign at Purdue in preseason women’s NIT opener

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team opens its 2010-11 campaign with the opening game of the 2010 Preseason Women’s NIT – a 4:00pm (CT) contest against Purdue at Mackey Arena.

The game will be the first of eight first-round contests in the Preseason Women’s NIT, all being held at campus sites across the country. It is the second time in program history Austin Peay has been invited to the preseason event – it competed in the 1996 event.

Lady Govs pull away in second half for exhibition victory

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Junior Whitney Hanley scored 28 points and made all eight of her three-point field goal sto lead Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team in its 84-37 exhibition victory against Cumberland, Monday night, at the Dunn Center.

Austin Peay led by 15 points, 39-24, at halftime but needed a 14-4 half-ending run to build that margin. Cumberland scored six consecutive points to cut the lead to five points, 25-20, with 5:05 remaining.

Rayner, Hill lead Lady Govs at “Reigning Red” scrimmage

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team got a two-week checkup as it held a scrimmage during Friday night’s “Reigning Red” festivities at the Dunn Center.

The Lady Govs, who started practice October 3rd, saw its two centers – junior Jasmine Rayner and sophomore Kaitlyn Hill – had impressive outings. Rayner was 4-for-5 from the field and scored nine points. Hill also made 4-of-5 field goals and finished with eight points and three assists.
