For the first time in recent memory, the Govs come in fresh, with no previous exhibition contests on their resume.

Instant Peay Play: APSU Men’s Basketball has laid groundwork for 2018-19 season and beyond

 

Instant Peay Play - APSU SportsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s men’s basketball team may have seen its season come to an end on March 21st, on a last-second shot by Illinois-Chicago, but first-year head coach Matt Figger and his staff have shown that the groundwork for a bright future has already been laid.

The Govs, who were picked to finish 11th out of 12 teams in the Ohio Valley Conference pre-season poll, finished the season 19-15 overall and 12-6 in OVC play – good enough for a third-place finish – the most wins and best finish in OVC play since the 2010-11 season.

APSU Basketball beats ULM 80-66 to move into CIT quarterfinals

APSU Men's BasketballClarksville, TN – A rejuvenating 13-day break might’ve been just what the doctor ordered for Austin Peay State University men’s basketball, which picked up its first win in a post-Ohio Valley Conference Tournament appearance since 2003 with an 80-66 victory against Sun Belt foe ULM, Thursday, in the first round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament.

The win pushes the Govs (19-14) onward into the CIT, with the Warhawks (16-16) 2017-18 campaign coming to an end.

Instant Peay Play: Exam Week gives APSU Basketball teams time to reflect on early-season action

 

Instant Peay Play - APSU SportsClarksville, TN – With Austin Peay State University going through its fall semester final exams this week it gives both basketball teams and their respective coaching staffs time to reflect on the season’s opening month and what they can do to prepare for the final few tune-ups before they head into Ohio Valley Conference play.

Both teams have played nine games so far, this season with the men’s team posting a respectable 4-5 overall record, despite having played four road games versus power-five conference opponents, while the women’s team had their longest win streak in over 13 years just end this past weekend and stand at 7-2 overall on the season.

APSU Men's BasketballNashville, TN – For the first time since 1990, Austin Peay State University men’s basketball debuted under new leadership, squaring off against Vanderbilt under the watchful eye of first-year head coach Matt Figger.

Although Austin Peay battled until the final whistle and pushed Vanderbilt to the limit, playing the Commodores within single digits for the early portion of the second half, a late Vanderbilt shooting barrage conspired to down the Govs, 73-54, at Memorial Gymnasium.

180 APSU Athletes earn Fall Semester Academic Honors

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – For the fourth consecutive semester, more than half of Austin Peay State University’s athletes received academic recognition following the recently concluded spring semester.

The department saw 180 athletes named to the Athletics Director’s Honor Roll, each earning a minimum 3.0 grade-point average during the semester. That amounted to more than 53 percent of the department’s near-record 335 athletes earning academic recognition from the department.

It is the fourth consecutive semester the department has seen more than 50 percent of its athletes post a 3.0 or better GPA.

Instant Peay Play: APSU Basketball teams start practice with shoes to fill and new players to acclimate

 

Instant Peay Play - APSU SportsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s men’s and women’s basketball have both started their pre-season practices for the upcoming 2016-17 season and like seasons before both have questions to be answered.

The biggest question for both teams is how you replace one of the best players to have played for your respective program, with the men’s team having to replace post player Chris Horton and the women’s team point guard Tiasha Gray.

170 APSU Student-Athletes earn Spring Semester Academic Honors

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Over half of Austin Peay State University’s student-athletes received academic recognition following the recently concluded spring semester with the department announcing its student-athletes posted a 2.91 grade-point average.

The department saw 170 student-athletes named to the Athletics Director’s Honor Roll, each earning a minimum 3.0 GPA during the semester. The athletics department saw 84 student-athletes named to Austin Peay’s Dean’s List and 34 of those were recognized on the President’s list, each posting an unblemished 4.0 GPA.

APSU Basketball beats Tennessee Tech 92-72; Chris Horton dominates with 37 points, 21 rebounds

Austin Peay State University Governors - APSUNashville, TN – Playing in his first Ohio Valley Conference tournament, senior center Chris Horton played like a man who wanted his college career to continue. Horton scored 37 points and grabbed 21 rebounds as No. 8 seed Austin Peay State University stunned No. 5 seed Tennessee Tech, 92-72, Wednesday night in first-round tourney action in Municipal Auditorium.

The Governors now will face No. 4 seed Tennessee State, 6:00pm, Thursday, in the tourney quarterfinal action, also in Municipal Auditorium.
