Austin Peay Lady Govs Indoor Track and Field falls to seventh at Ohio Valley Conference Championships

APSU Sports: Austin Peay Women’s Track and Field

Austin Peay State University Lady GovsNashville, TN – After a promising start, Austin Peay State University women’s track and field team finished seventh at 2012 Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Tennessee State at the Gentry Center.

The Lady Govs simply lacked the depth to maintain its hot start, provided by Tanesha Campbell winning the shot put on Day One. Campbell was named first-team All-OVC – the first Lady Govs athlete to receive the honor since Carrie Burgraff in 2010.

Xiamar Richards set a school record in the 5,000-meter run (17:53.05), breaking Bertha Castillo’s mark set in 2007. However, even with a school-record run, Richards finished third in the championship heat. She would also score a seventh-place finish in the 3,000-meter with a time of 10:31.26.

Chantelle Grey came up short in the 800-meter run, finishing third (2:10.44), improving almost five seconds from her preliminary time, but falling short of her personal goal.

In the field events, Lauren Lyles finished fifth in the high jump at 1.58m and sixth in the long jump at 5.67m. Cenitra Hudson, meanwhile, neared her own school record in the triple jump with a third-place finish at 11.92m.

Eastern Illinois was crowned the team champion with 149.5 points, followed by Eastern Kentucky with 101 points. Jacksonville State (86), Tennessee State (83), Southeast Missouri (74), Murray State (63), Austin Peay (62.5) and Tennessee Tech (3) rounded out the team scoring.
